We LOVE food hacks here at KOTC/KITC! They save you time, effort and you often discover something super tasty (and super clever) along the way! So, here are 10 of our favourite all time food hacks, especially for you. You are very welcome!

1. Instant biscuits

Who’d have known? Instantly turn a cake mix into biscuit dough by adding 2 eggs and ½ cup of oil.

2. Natural flavour

Simply put some berries into an ice cube tray – raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, or blueberries – add a bit of water to fill the tray and freeze. When you’re craving a refreshing glass of water, pop a couple of cubes into the glass. The berries will release a lovely fruity flavour and make a plain old glass of water look scrumptious too!

3. Keep salad fresh

It’s always frustrating when the salad you only made the day before suddenly turns soggy. Why not try the paper towel hack? Take a single paper towel, place it on top of the lettuce leaves and then cover with cling wrap. The paper towel will absorb the moisture from the leaves and the salad stays crisp!

4. Stop potatoes from budding

Do you often have sprouting potatoes lurking in the cupboard? To stop them sprouting, simply add an apple to the potatoes! Seriously. Try it! The ethylene gas produced by the apple will keep the potatoes from sprouting.

5. Remove the hull of a strawberry

Stop wasting all of that yummy strawberry by cutting off the top! Simply grab a straw, push it through the middle of the strawberry and push the hull out. No waste!

6. Run out of buttermilk?

Don’t bother going to the grocery store to get some. All you have to do is combine milk with a little vinegar for a great alternative.

7. Measuring sticky ingredients

Measuring things like honey or syrup can be a messy and sticky task. To stop them sticking to the measuring cup, spray the cup with non-stick baking spray first and then they will just slide off! Picture credit:

8. Storing leafy greens

When storing leafy greens in your refrigerator, line your crisper with cotton tea towels. The towels will absorb moisture and keep the greens dry so you never have soggy spinach or floppy lettuce again!

9. Make your own icing sugar

You’ve just baked a cake and you’re ready to make the icing but you’ve run out of icing sugar! Well, did you know you can make icing sugar from raw sugar? Simply add the required amount of sugar to a blender/food processor/Thermomix and blend until it forms a powdered consistency.

10. Get more juice

To get more juice from your lemons, limes and oranges, heat them in the microwave for 5-10 seconds before juicing. Simple, but brilliant!
