Home-made Baked Beans

What’s even better than baked beans from a can? It’s got to be home-made baked beans of course. If you’ve never tried making your own baked beans, why not give this healthy recipe a try!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups navy or pinto beans (soaked overnight)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato finely chopped
  • 2 tsp coconut oil
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1 1/2 tsp powdered mustard
  • 1/2 cup rice malt syrup/maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 cup tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dulse flakes

Method

Drain soaked beans, then place in a pot and add 8 cups of water. 

Bring to the boil, cover and simmer for 1 hr. 

Whilst simmering in a saucepan add the coconut oil, garlic and onion and sauté gently.   

Drain beans and add to the saucepan along with remaining ingredients. 

Simmer for 15 to 20 mins or until beans are soft.
