The Debra Whitten School of Dance is a successful and established dance school that has nurtured the growth of dancers for over twenty years located in Underwood, Queensland. Principal Debra Whitten is an examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance. Under her direction the Debra Whitten School of Dance has grown over the past twenty years to be an exceptionally highly respected school based in South- East Queensland. The Debra Whitten School of Dance is an award winning school which offers experienced, qualified and highly skilled teachers. Students have won countless competitions, eisteddfods and scholarships and have had a myriad of performance opportunities. Former students have gone on to dance professionally in many different realms of the dance world including classical ballet companies, contemporary dance companies, musical theatre productions and more.
Every student at the Debra Whitten School of Dance is motivated, inspired and encouraged to perform to the best of their ability. We cater to the talents of each individual student.
Classes are offered in Classical Ballet- The Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus and Examinations, Contemporary, Jazz and Tap- The Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing Syllabus and Examinations. We have a specialised junior school programme to develop the love of dance and talents of each individual in a fun and imaginative class environment.
Tinies (2- 4 years)
A fun one hour class that introduces children to dance in an enjoyable way. This class aims to teach basic co-ordination and movement, general appreciation and understanding of music and rhythm. This class consists of 1/2 hr of ballet and 1/2 hr of tap and incorporates storytelling and acting.
Kindy Ballet (4-5 years)
This fun and exciting class introduces ballet technique in a fun and imaginative way. The students gain skills in co-ordination, rhythm & musicality. These classes are the most enriching introduction to performing arts.
Beginners Tap (4-6 years)
A fun and innovative class which aims to teach rhythm, co- ordination and the basis of tap technique. These classes are the most enriching introduction to performing arts. This class is designed to suit the developmental stages of four to six year olds and is a fun, safe and high quality training programme
Beginners Jazz (4-6 years)
A fun class which introduces basic jazz technique, increases co-ordination, musicality and the joy of dance! This class is designed to suit the developmental stages of four to six year olds and is a fun, safe and high quality training programme. These classes are aimed to help your four to six year old develop a lifelong love of the performing arts!
Royal Academy of Dance Grade Syllabus
The foundation of ballet commences here. These students study the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Syllabus to undertake an annual examination, all students attend two ballet classes of their grade per week. The RAD offers an examination program to suit everybody whether new to ballet or already an advanced student. Both the Graded & Vocational Graded Qualifications are on the QCE database of accredited qualifications.
