We chat to Mrs Carmel Schaumberg, Principal at St Thomas More Catholic Primary, to find out more about life at this busy and much-loved school.
Can you tell us a little about the ethos of St Thomas More?
St Thomas More is a Catholic Parish School, where, in truth and love, we educate the whole child. We have strong connections with the Noosa District Catholic Parish with Fr. Jason and Fr. Paul being very special members of our community. We are also part of the Marist schools network, enriched by the characteristics of Simplicity, Family Spirit, Love of Work, Presence, and in the Way of Mary. We aim to live our charism in supportive and real ways. Our classroom Pastoral Parents, Marist Café and sense of welcome are some ways that we make prayer come to life in our community.
What does St Thomas More Primary excel at?
Our school is rich in academic, cultural and sporting opportunities, with a focus on excellent education in a nurturing, challenging and inclusive environment. Our focus on ongoing improvement and innovation reflects our commitment to children’s learning and development. Our innovation in technology and learning space design also enhance student learning opportunities.
Why do you feel St Thomas More is so unique?
The partnerships with the community and parents greatly enhance the learning opportunities for our students. It is through such strong connections that we grow and invest in our community, for the future lies in our children. One partnership is worthy of special mention, that with our children. Their voice and engagement provide wonderful guidance in our teaching and the broader opportunities that our school offers.
What is your favourite part of your role as Principal at St Thomas More Primary?
I love so many things about my role here at St Thomas More! I have been fortunate to take up the role of principal at the commencement of 2019. What a privilege this has been, to become part of such an aspirational, caring and strongly spiritual school family.
We celebrated our school’s 30th birthday this year. Many past community members celebrated this milestone, reflecting a strong sense of family and connection, acknowledging St Thomas More as a very special part of their lives. Our mission and values guide us to be this for all members of our community, in many and varied ways. It is with great pride that I have been called to lead this great school. A school where the love of God shines through each person.
