FREE parent workshops to help parents support their child’s learning

A new series of free parent workshops is being launched at Matthew Flinders Anglican College to help all parents learn how to support their children’s learning.

The first of the ‘Success Starts Early’ workshops, entitled ‘Developing Essential Early Literacy Skills At Home’, will be held on Thursday, 1 August from 7:00pm to 8:00pm at Flinders in Buderim and is open to all parents with children ages 4-7 years.

Flinders Head of Primary School Trudi Edwards says research reveals that strong early literacy skills are the most reliable predictor of positive longer-term educational outcomes.

“At Flinders, we know that success starts early,” says Trudi, “and that’s why we are committed to working with parents to assist in developing robust foundational skills and a love of learning in their children during the early years of school.

“We also believe that schools must be learning centres for all: students, staff, parents and the broader community to which they belong,” she said.

“Our new ‘Success Starts Early’ series recognises that parents are children’s first and most important teachers yet they often don’t know where to start with providing the support their children need once they start school and begin learning to read.

“The first of the free parent workshops is practical and fun, and is packed with information, ideas and strategies for parents to use at home to assist with early literacy development.

“Parents will learn how to engage their children in early literacy activities to help develop their confidence and competence to support a flying start to school.”
