Have you ever imagined getting up close and personal with a kangaroo? Cuddling a koala? Feeding a crocodile? Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is the ultimate wildlife adventure for families! Nestled within 27 hectares of lush eucalyptus and rainforest, there are so many wild and wonderful things to see and do, a day won’t feel like enough!
Where do you start your adventure? You can’t go past the Lorikeet feeding at the entrance to the park. Watch dozens of wild, friendly, energetic and beautiful Rainbow Lorikeets and the Scaley-breasted Lorikeets flying around and perching themselves on your arms and heads. The colourful birds aren’t shy of humans and will eat food right from your hands. Feeding times are 8am and 4pm.
The WILD SKIES Free Flight Bird Show is a must see where you will meet some of Australia’s most beautiful species of birds including the Australian Pelican and the largest bird of prey in Australia – the Wedge-tailed eagle, along with colourful parrots and birds of prey. Watch them free fly over the audience in a wonderful display set against the Sanctuary’s natural environment. As a bonus, you can get a photo one of the stars of the show if you stay after the show! The shows are on daily at 11.20am and 2.30pm.
Celebrate the rich local Gold Coast culture and learn the history of this lands first people by experiencing a taste of the Yugambeh language, dance and stories performed by the amazing Yugambeh Aboriginal dancers at the Aboriginal Culture Show. Learn about the invisible laws of nature and its power and have your photo taken with the incredible local performers in full traditional garb and paint. The shows are daily at 3.30pm.
Imagine going back in time… Visit Lost Valley and take a journey through the ancient supercontinent Gondwana and immerse yourself in an environment that existed five million years ago. Explore the forgotten world and interact with Australia’s heaviest bird, the Cassowary or the shy Red Panda who live in the high treetops of the Himalayas, meet the Lemurs, Cotton Top Tamarins along with the free flying birds and the most unique and exotic reptiles you have ever seen.
Get your smart phones ready and hand them over to the kids for the Gruffalo Trail. This new interactive trail takes you on a journey through the deep dark woods where you will meet your favourite characters along the way, through the Gruffalo Spotter app. You can download the app at both the Google and App store and look for the markers along the way to bring the characters to life. There are five markers that activate Mouse, Fox, Owl, Snake and of course the Gruffalo. Be careful, they are sneaky and might surprise you! You can take a photo with each character but make sure to save the photo.
Walk on the wild side with 15 exciting animal encounters! Learn interesting facts about the Capybara, and Toro, Armani and Pablo the Cotton-Top Tamarin troop. Meet Marrok, the pure white alpine Dingo. Come inside the Dingo enclosure and watch him work. Enjoy meeting the short-beaked echidnas and learn about their unique and personalities – watch out for the spikes! If you have ever wanted to cuddle a koala, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the few places in Australia that allow visitors the privilege. There are so many animal encounters to choose from, you won’t know where to start!
You can watch the incredible vets and volunteers rehabilitating and preserving wildlife at one of the busiest hospitals in the world, the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital. See how they look after some of the most beautiful and deadliest wildlife and learn how you can help some of Australia’s endangered species. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is a not-for-profit organisation and reinvests all proceeds back into wildlife and conservation programs.
With so much to do and see at the sanctuary you will get hungry you can take a break for a late breakfast or lunch or even just grab a snack or coffee on the go from one of the eateries at the sanctuary. There is something to satisfy every taste bud. The Sanctuary Café is located at the entrance and offers traditional favourites and café style staples. Wild Burgers is located at the heart of the sanctuary and offers a selection of delicious food from burgers, fish and chips to fresh fruit salads and ice-cream. You can stop off at the Kangaroo Outpost, located at the Kangaroo paddocks and grab a sausage roll, pie or gourmet sandwich while enjoying the tranquil surroundings.
If you want a little break from all the action, you can jump on one of four shiny red, blue and green miniature heritage trains, stopping and picking up at the park’s entrance, Green Patch, Kangaroo Crossing and Wild Island. The train is a perfect way to relax while taking in the stunning surroundings.
Before you leave, pop into Nature’s Gift Store, located at the entrance/exit and treat yourself to a t-shirt, a plush toy, some stationary – there are so many souvenirs to choose from! You can also collect your photos of your day at the Photography Counter and take home all the memories of your adventure filled day.
