NOTICEBOARD: St Hilda’s girls chop their locks to support Aussie kids

15 August 2019

On Wednesday 14 August almost 40 St Hilda’s School girls cut their hair to help give Aussie kids a fair go, raising funds for Variety – The Children’s Charity.

Each girl cut and donated at least eight inches of hair which was collected by Sustainable Salons, a social enterprise that repurposes hair to make wigs for those who have lost their hair due to a medical condition such as alopecia.

Nearly $19,000 has been raised by St Hilda’s students who have been growing their locks for several months.

Money received by Variety for the hair will go directly towards providing children with practical programs. The students’ hair can help Variety help Aussie kids by providing practical equipment, programs and experiences to help Aussie kids overcome obstacles they face and live life to the fullest.

Acting Principal of St Hilda’s School, Ms Wendy Lauman, said she is delighted that so many of the girls are getting involved.

“Our school motto, Non Nobis Solum (not for ourselves alone), is an important part of our heritage. At St Hilda’s, our young women actively seek opportunities to look out for the needs of others,” Ms Lauman said.

“They practice empathy and live by our core values of love, compassion, forgiveness, hope and grace.”
CEO of Variety Queensland, Steve Wakerley, said students like Grace Flynn, who is the driving force behind this event, make a big difference to the lives of Aussie kids.

“Variety doesn’t receive any government funding, so every wig and every piece of equipment granted to families is thanks to the amazing efforts of people like Grace, who has rallied almost 40 girls in the Year 12 cohort to get the chop too,” said Mr Wakerley.

“We can’t thank the young ladies from St Hilda’s School enough for their incredible efforts to give all Aussie kids a fair go.”

Local Gold Coast Salon, Neon Hair & Beauty provided volunteer hairdressers to cut the girls’ hair.
