LOCAL LIFE: The story of the Long-Awaited Child

16 October 2018

Everyone's journey to motherhood is different. Some have a straightforward road, but many couples sadly do not.

Long-Awaited Child is the very personal story from one Sunshine Coast mum of her journey of trying to have a family of her own.

We chat to Kellie to find out more about her story and her newly released book:

What is your new book about?

Falling pregnant did not come easy for me and that really shocked me! All those years I took precautions not to fall pregnant only to find that it was not as easy as finding the right guy you wanted to settle down with and you know...

My recently released book, Long-Awaited Child, covers my eight year journey from when I was 31 and first trying to have a baby with my partner, Ian, to finally being a mummy at 39. Trust me when I say these years were not easy, because they really were not. We had to do a lot of research and try other options like IVF, foster care, adoption and international surrogacy to make our dream of having a family come true. It was during these years it was time for my strength and resilience to really shine.

Had you always wanted children?

Being a mum was something I wanted, and there was no stopping me! Writing my story has been something I have wanted to do since my twins were born, well in fact before they were born, but we knew they were on their way. Time just flies by and with having two little ones and moving a few times during that time to finally settling back on the Sunshine Coast, life has been pretty busy. However, it was always in the back of my mind and when this year rolled around I knew this was the year I was going to really share my story.

How challenging was putting such a personal story down on paper?

I have loved every moment of writing the book, my story. It brought back all the memories of our journey and trust me when I say there were plenty of tears along the way reliving all we had been through. I truly love my story and would not change it for the world. I hope my story will help to inspire anyone who is about to start, or is going through a journey similar to mine to not give up and if it is really what you want, to try every possible avenue. Don't doubt yourself, you have got this!

Also for anyone who has a sister, best friend or daughter going through fertility struggles of their own, I know you are probably wishing you can fix this, their infertility issues, for them, but you can't. You just have to let them ride the wave and do what is best for themselves. They may need you or may not but either way you need to be okay with this. Trust me when I say it is not an easy journey, so you need to let them do it their way and just be there for support if needed. I wish you all the best in your own journeys.
