What’s on the Sunshine Coast this weekend for families and kids

Are you counting down the days and hours (even minutes and seconds) to the weekend? Same here! Across the Sunshine Coast region you’ll find a whole host of events to keep you and the kids busy… Here are our top picks for the weekend ahead.

Just for the girls

There are a couple of events designed just for the girls this week. The next Mighty Girl Workshop is on Sunday, July 31 in Buderim. These empowering workshops are designed for girls aged seven to 15 years and help girls be happier and more confident. Participants will create an art project that will become her own tool for self-empowerment. The workshops are also a wonderful opportunity to connect with other Mighty Girls on the Sunshine Coast.

Also just for the girls is the Sunshine Coast Women & Girls’ Chess Championships 2022, held at Caloundra City Private School on Sunday, July 31. This chess tournament provides a friendly, non-intimidating space for girls to play competitively and possibly spark a love for the game. All ages and levels welcome.

Two Girls Playing Chess

For those who like to play!

The return to school means the return of the playgroup. Hooray! If you’ve got very little ones, there is an unstructured Fun Friday Playgroup at Ben Bennett Park, Caloundra. This drop-in playgroup is held every Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Dads, grandparents, and mums are all welcome!

Just want to get out and have some fun? The Y Caloundra has Casual Gym Play Sessions on Wednesdays and Fridays each week from 10am to 11am. Open to children walking to five years old, they can bounce, jump, crawl, climb and swing to their little hearts content with you by their side.

Wildlings Playgroup Sunshine Coast

Can’t make a Friday session, head to Maroochy Botanical Gardens on Tuesday morning for the Wildlings Playgroup. Children can participate in an activity or project and join the Wildlings team for a song and story time. This nature-based playgroup is designed for kids from newborn to three years of age, but older siblings are welcome.

Free fun for the kids

For the kids that prefer to get crafty, APT10 Kids on Tour is currently on at Caloundra Regional Gallery. Explore and experience free hands-on art-making activities throughout July and August with this popular touring exhibition. While you’re at the Gallery, explore the Kids Art Trail. Especially for kids, this trail encourages exploration of the artworks and themes. Kids look for clues, find art, solve puzzles and create your own artworks. Suitable for kids aged four to 12 years, the Art Trail is free and changes with each exhibition.

Apt on Tour caloundra

Head along to the Maleny or Beerwah libraries for Rhymetime on Friday, July 29 from 9:30am to 10am. These sessions are suitable for children from newborn to two years of age. Children discover more about the magical world of nursery rhymes and books. Meet other parents and babies for a fun session of singing, clapping and dancing. You’ll learn songs and action rhymes to nurture your baby’s pre-literacy, communication, language and social skills.

Family-friendly festivals

For the little beanies in your world, The Beanies will be on stage this Saturday on Noosa Beach as part of Noosa Alive Festival 2022. Best known for their award-winning podcast and ARIA-nominated music released with ABC Kids, join Laura, Mim, and Michael Beanie as they do The Silly Dizzy Dance, sing ‘Saturday Morning Cuddles’, and lots, lots more.

Head along to Eumundi’s family-friendly music festival Sunshine Sounds this Friday, July 29 and Saturday, July 30. Celebrating homegrown artistry on Gubbi Gubbi Country in Eumundi, there is a delightful line-up of creatives ready to brighten your weekend mood. Included in the all-Australian acts is Katie and Tyrone Noonan of the bane george, Clare Bowditch, Tim Rogers and more! This year’s festival also includes the Eumundi School of Rock, a program of young musicians aged between eight and 17 who’ll play live on-stage on Friday. For those who like a sing-along, join the Sunshine Sounds Community Choir on Saturday. Get your tickets from the Sunshine Sounds Festival website.

This weekend marks the start of the Sunshine Coast’s latest festival, The Curated (Side) Plate. It promises a 2022-sized serving of local produce, fresh seafood, and unique culinary experiences over 10 days. Check out the full program via the website.

Coming Up…

For the older kids, Shock Therapy Productions presents Undertow on Wednesday, August 3 at Venue 114, Bokarina. Centering around a high school community, the show follows a group of individuals, from a range of backgrounds, all dealing with their own unique challenges. Undertow is an honest and powerful look at the hidden forces, beneath the surface that move us and determine the choices we make and the actions we take. The result is storytelling that is fluid and inventive, sweeping you up in its current as the story pulls you deeper.

Crayola free preschool activities

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, events may be postponed or cancelled at the last minute. We do our best to ensure our events are up to date, but be sure to check the organiser’s own event page for the most current updates.
