The former Kenmore State High School student clocked an impressive time of 52.06 seconds at a race meet in Brisbane before the Australian team head to the Rio Olympics. But Campbell, 24, is trying to remain grounded despite her recent success.
She told The Courier Mail: “One of my favourite movies growing up was Cool Runnings and there was a really cool quote in it from the coach who says ‘a gold medal is a wonderful thing but if you’re not enough without it you will never be enough with it.’
“I really need to take it to heart. I’ve achieved incredible things and an Olympic gold medal would be the absolute pinnacle for me but I have to make sure I’m okay if that doesn’t happen and I am okay if that doesn’t happen.”
Campbell’s achievement makes her the first Australian in seven years to break an individual world record.
