What is a typical day in the life of a Prep student?

What happens in a typical day of a Prep student? We chat to Caloundra City Private School Prep teacher Ashleigh Bennett to find out.

What does the start of a Prep day look like?

“At the start of the day Prep gets organised and are encouraged to unpack their bags (lunch box, fruit, hat, water bottle) so they can find all of their belongings later in the day. Prep then join with their friends and enjoy inside activities before the bell goes. At the bell it’s time to say a quick goodbye to parents and carers so our learning time can begin.”

What would a typical day look like following their morning?

“Prep starts their week by learning a new sound. The class enjoys our daily sound activities. They go on a ‘sound hunt’ to find where their sound is hiding. We then see how many sound words they can think of. After a morning of these activities and practising to say their magic words, it is time for a brain break. They have fruit and water before playing outside and joining their friends for some outside activities.

Once they are recharged, it is back inside for reading and fine motor activities which takes us through to morning tea.

After they have their morning tea break it’s time to work on counting. They spend the middle session of the day working with numbers, manipulating concrete materials and working on their numeracy skills.

After their number work, Prep has lunch where they have lots of time to play with their friends, go on the play equipment, the obstacle course and in the sandpit.

Their last learning session of the day is filled with either discovering wonderful facts in science or having some technology time.

Then it’s time to pack their bags, have a show and share and vote for their favourite book that we all read together.

After all of this, it’s time for all of the Preps to say goodbye and head home.”

In addition to this, CCPS Prep students participate in several specialist lessons taught by specific teachers, these include:

  • Japanese
  • HPE
  • Music
  • Library
Crayola free preschool activities

What do the students have to say? We asked a couple of CCPS Prep students how their first few weeks are going.
