Free Surf Groms program for underprivileged kids

Learning to surf is fun, empowering and teaches each person life-long skills. Surfing Services Australia has been given the opportunity to work closely with registered children’s charities by offering a free Surf Groms program to those children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in surfing.

“Two of our children did the surf lessons organised by ASD4kids. One is very confident in the water and got right in. It was a fabulous introduction to surfing for him and he can’t wait to do it again.” said Leanne Johnson, mother of three. “Our daughter had a meltdown, however the instructors were so patient with her and waited for her to calm down before starting again. They made her feel so comfortable that she came away with a smile on her face and a feeling of accomplishment.”

It is well documented that learning to surf has many therapeutic benefits to people who are underprivileged, unwell or have special needs. Learning to surf is a fantastic confidence builder and brings with it a great sense of achievement, responsibility and self-confidence. It empowers the individual and brings joy to the child and their family. Surfing also allows children to experience the wave of a lifetime by learning new skills and laughing along the way.

All surfing equipment is included in the free Surf Groms program. Basic surf safety skills are learned. Anyone aged five and over is welcome! All sessions are held at Currumbin Alley. For more information, contact www.surfingservices.com.au.
