NOTICEBOARD: Most Innovative School
award for St Rita’s

05 January 2019

St Rita’s College has been named as one of the country’s most innovative Schools in a 2018 report published by The Educator magazine.

Recognised for its Australian first
Read Like a Girl program, St Rita’s
was chosen from one of 40 schools from education elite across the country that are collectively shaping the future of education.

“We are thrilled to be included in this report for our Read Like a Girl program which has been so hugely successful,” Acting Head of Library, Mrs Penny Waring said.

The Read Like a Girl program was founded in 2017 in collaboration with
Mt Alvernia College and Riverbend Books with the aim to capture the correlation of reading and academic success and combating declining literacy rates by reinvigorating a love of reading among students and the wider community.  Research has shown that in 2016, less
than 61 per cent of ladies above 14 years old had read a novel in any three-month period. This is a drop from the 2010 figure of more than 64 per cent. The same study found that only 34.2 per cent of young women read
non-fiction books, a decline from 39.2 per cent in 2010.

A modern school with a strong commitment to social justice, St Rita’s is
an independent Catholic day school for girls from Years 7–12 offering a comprehensive, faith-filled secondary education.
