New $45.4 million Library+ Caloundra set to open with family celebration

The Sunshine Coast is about to welcome a library like no other – and families are invited to be among the first through the doors when the brand-new Library+ Caloundra officially opens on Monday, September 22.

Located at 1 Omrah Avenue, the $45.4 million state-of-the-art facility has been designed as a modern hub for learning, connection and civic life. Sunshine Coast Council is marking the milestone with a community celebration from 10 am, featuring a packed program of family-friendly fun.

Children can look forward to colourful face painting, play spaces, and interactive experiences, while adults can take a first look at the striking building that brings together library services, community meeting areas, exhibition spaces and Council offices under one roof.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 2 Councillor Terry Landsberg said the new facility was much more than just a library.

“This new facility has been designed to bring together library services, community spaces and Council functions under one roof – creating a welcoming and flexible destination for residents of all ages,” Cr Landsberg said.

“Library+ Caloundra will offer a range of services and spaces, from contemporary library collections and technology to large meeting rooms, event areas and Council offices – all designed to support our growing community.

“This is an incredible facility that I’m proud to welcome our community into. I look forward to seeing the spaces come to life when it opens, and for generations to come.”

A new kind of library on the Sunshine Coast

Inside, families will discover a space designed to inspire curiosity, play and connection. The kids’ library features an interactive STEM wall, cosy reading cubbies, and a play area designed to spark imagination and learning. For parents, it’s a place where little ones can fall in love with books and learning from the earliest years.

Teenagers and young adults haven’t been forgotten either, with a dedicated youth area perfect for study or hanging out with friends. For adults, there’s everything from quiet lounges and digital resources to meeting rooms, AV booths, and BYO device benches.

Families can also take advantage of the outdoor covered deck for fresh air, or grab a coffee and snack from the ground-floor kiosk.

More than books

While traditional collections remain at the heart of the library – from bestselling fiction to local history archives – the new facility goes further, offering spaces for collaboration, exhibitions, community events and even Council services.

Visitors can contribute to a community jigsaw puzzle, catch the latest exhibition, or simply relax with a magazine in a sunny reading nook. With free library membership, families can start borrowing on opening day or sign up on the spot.
