Finding the balance: All-round excellence at Sunshine Coast Grammar School

Is the secret to academic excellence actually found outside the classroom? We visit Sunshine Coast Grammar School to find out.

Academic success has always been a hallmark of Sunshine Coast Grammar School, but the secret to their students’ achievements lies in a simple philosophy: a balanced education. By combining high-quality learning programs with a culture that encourages students to strive for their personal best, the school creates an environment where young people can truly explore their passions.

A standout example of this commitment is the School’s SOAR program. Specifically designed for high-achieving and motivated students, SOAR provides targeted enrichment through workshops in philosophy, critical thinking, mathematics, and STEAM. These aren’t just standard classroom lessons; they are gateways to prestigious academic events such as the da Vinci Decathlon, G.A.T.E.WAYS immersion days, and Ethics Olympiads. By participating in entrepreneurship programs and robotics tournaments, students are challenged to think deeply and creatively, broadening their horizons well beyond the traditional curriculum.

Perfect ATAR from a passion for rugby

The results of this approach speak for themselves. In 2025, the Grammar community celebrated a significant milestone when Nicholas Heeks achieved a perfect ATAR of 99.95. While his result reflects immense academic talent, it also highlights the strength of the school’s personalised support and teaching excellence. Equally impressive was Nicholas’ balanced approach to school life. A passionate rugby player, he credits his time on the field as a vital part of his journey, proving that co-curricular engagement is a key driver of wellbeing, resilience, and academic success.

Sunshine Coast Grammar School strongly believes that a balanced education delivers the best long-term outcomes. To support this, the school continues to invest heavily in highly experienced teachers, coaches, and mentors who are recognised leaders in their fields. With more than 50 co-curricular activities on offer, students are encouraged to pursue their interests across sport, the arts, and community service, learning from professionals who bring real-world expertise to the campus.

Success in robotics

This investment in expert guidance was on the world stage earlier this year when the school’s robotics team, the Iron Lions, represented Australia at the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championships in Houston, Texas. Competing against 15,000 students from around the globe, the team’s success was a testament to the technical coaching and innovation fostered within the school’s specialist programs.

Sport is equally integral to the Grammar experience, with students supported by high-level coaching staff across a wide range of codes. Whether it is Basketball, Netball, Rugby, Swimming, Triathlon, or Water Polo, students have the opportunity to train with elite athletes. These mentors provide invaluable insight into high-performance pathways while maintaining a vital focus on age-appropriate development and teamwork.

Beyond the campus, the school encourages a broader worldview through international cultural tours to Italy, France, Japan, and Timor Leste. Closer to home, service to the community remains a core value. Through the Grammar Helping Hands program, students actively participate in initiatives that promote social inclusion and environmental sustainability, ensuring they graduate as well-rounded global citizens.

Principal Mrs Anna Owen believes these diverse opportunities are what allow students to truly flourish.

“Our results speak to the high calibre of our students and the exceptional support they receive every day,” says Mrs Owen. “Access to outstanding teachers and professional coaches, combined with a strong academic framework, allows our students to be as committed and driven outside the classroom as they are within it. Our co-curricular program continues to grow, and these achievements show just how capable our students are.”

By focusing on academic rigour alongside world-class opportunities, Sunshine Coast Grammar School continues to prepare students for success—both at school and in the years to follow.
