Brisbane families will soon be invited on a sweeping theatrical adventure when the Broadway musical ANASTASIA arrives at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC, from September 2026.
Following a glittering Australian debut at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre, the much-loved production will make its Queensland premiere as part of a national tour produced by John Frost for Crossroads Live and Opera Australia.
Inspired by the mysterious legend of Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov and the 1997 animated film that became a childhood favourite for many parents today, Anastasia is a lavish stage musical filled with soaring songs, striking costumes and cinematic staging — making it a memorable theatre experience for the whole family.
At its heart is the story of Anya, a brave young woman determined to uncover the truth about her past. As she journeys from revolutionary Russia to the glittering streets of 1920s Paris, she discovers that home, love and family are what truly matter — themes that resonate strongly with audiences of all ages.
The cast of Anastasia at QPAC
Queensland performer Georgina Hopson leads the cast as Anya, returning home to share the production with Brisbane audiences.
“As a very proud Queenslander, I just can’t wait to share the magic of Anastasia with Brisbane audiences,” she said. “It’s a beautiful story to be immersed in, accompanied by iconic songs that invoke a nostalgic feeling of our shared childhood, including Once Upon a December and Journey to the Past.”
Hopson, who trained at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, says the show’s message makes it particularly special. “Anastasia’s message is the importance of home, love and family, and to me Queensland represents all of this.”
She is joined by a stellar cast including Rhonda Burchmore as Countess Lily and theatre icon Nancye Hayes as the Dowager Empress, alongside Robert Tripolino, Joshua Robson and Rodney Dobson.
Straight from Broadway to QPAC
Created by the Tony Award-winning team of Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, and directed by Darko Tresnjak, the musical premiered on Broadway in 2017 and has since won more than 15 major international awards.
With its opulent sets, dazzling choreography and beloved score, Anastasia promises a magical night out — whether you’re introducing your children to live theatre for the first time or reliving the soundtrack of your own childhood.
Brisbane audiences can join the waitlist now, with pre-sale tickets available from 2 March and general public sales opening 6 March.
For families looking to share an unforgettable story about courage, identity and belonging, Anastasia may well be the theatrical event of the year.
