Kids in the City | Spring 2024 edition OUT NOW!

Welcome to Spring, to warmer days, and our Kids in the City SWIM Special!

Those who know me know that I have a love-hate relationship with swimming. I’m fiercely determined that my children learn to swim, with weekends spent coaxing them into the ocean and after-school sessions spent cheering them on at the pool. All despite my own crippling fear of water. Ironically, after living by the ocean for almost 25 years, I haven’t been able to overcome my phobia, and I am adamant that my kids will not inherit this trait.

On trips north to the reef, you’ll find me holding the towels or hovering at the shoreline, hoping a turtle will come over to say ‘hi’. I don’t think many people understand the importance of learning to swim more than those who are resigned to the sidelines and live in constant fear when around water.

So, to help us all transition to spring and water-safe days, we chat with learn-to-swim expert Chris Shapland from Shapland Swimming to learn more about what makes his family’s unique learn-to-swim program so successful.

Still riding the wave from the Paris Olympics? Our special section looks at the swim school nurturing infants into Olympians. We also have some great tips from Australian Swimming Industry educator Karen Baildon on how to fast-track your child’s swim development safely.

Plus, if your child is showing signs of being scared of the water, we have some great tips on overcoming aquaphobia. I will be putting some of these into practice for myself this spring!

Out of the pool, we visit Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure Ashmore to learn more about their dedication to native flora and sustainable gardening program. We also chat with the husband-and-wife duo from Growlife Medical, who are creating a beautiful village for lifelong healthcare for everyone in their care.

As always, we have the regular news, reviews, kid-friendly events and more, all wrapped up in our splash-tastic spring edition of Kids in the City!
