11 weird and wonderful facts about babies

Snuggly, wriggly and oh-so precious, babies are fascinating little bundles of joy. But did you know these weird and wonderful facts about babies?

  1. A baby is born with 300 bones at birth. These eventually fuse together to form the 206 bones that adults have.
  2. Newborns can hear as well as an adult. They startle at just about anything, not because it’s softer or louder, but because these sounds are new to them.
  3. During the nine months in the womb, a baby’s weight increases a whopping 3 million times!
  4. Babies feel sleepy all the time. During the first few days, a baby will be alert for just three minutes in every hour of the day and less at night.
  5. A baby’s brain can use up to 60% of their total glucose supply, which can explain why babies need so much sleep.
  6. Once a baby has learned to laugh, they laugh, on average, 300 times a day, while adults laugh only 60 times. Seems that babies enjoy life much more than we do!
  7. Babies cry in your accent! They pick up their mother’s native tongue in the last three months of pregnancy, and this is reflected in their cries after birth. So, you can tell between babies of different nationalities by their cries and gurgles.
  8. When a baby is in the womb, they use one hand more than the other. They will prefer to use the same one after birth too.
  9. Newborn babies can only see black and white for the first few months of their life.
  10. Around the world, an average of 4.5 babies are born every second.
  11. Babies are born with 30,000 taste buds, compared to the average adult’s 10,000. Yep, that one-ingredient puree is a taste sensation for them!
