The summer school holidays are here and there are plenty of great kids shows in Brisbane over the school break. From circus performances and workshops and ballet, through to stage performances and a plethora of children’s Christmas shows, here are our top seven picks!

Roald Dahl’s The Twits

Roald Dahl’s gruesome twosome The Twits return to QPAC this December after a sold out season in April. They will delight and disgust, in equal measure.

Packed with Dahlicious mischief, hilarious mayhem and big belly laughs, The Twits is unmissable summer school holiday fun for all ages. The performance is brought to life by Shake & Stir Theatre Co – the team behind the sold out seasons of Fantastic Mr Fox and George’s Marvellous Medicine.

Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins

Seen by tens of millions of people worldwide, this magical stage adaptation of the wonderful stories by Queensland-born author PL Travers has been delighting a whole new generation of theatre-goers in Sydney. It’s on now until January 15, 2023 at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC. With dazzling choreography, incredible effects, and unforgettable songs, the story of the world’s favourite Nanny arriving on Cherry Tree Lane is even more magical in this new production.

Garden Party by Arc Circus

Garden Party is the buzzy new summer holiday adventure featuring Queen Bee and Worker Bee. It’s playing at the Roundhouse Theatre, La Boite from January 11-21, 2023.

There’s a kaleidoscope of acrobatics, dance, magic and live music in this uniquely Australian circus and physical theatre show. It’s captures the imagination of children and families alike!

Join the bees on their magical adventure and be amazed by their super strength, glow-in-the-dark escapades, acrobatic skills, groovy dance moves, and giant new friends.

Room on the Broom

Watch closely as this stage performance of the much-loved picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler casts a spell on audiences. It lands in QUT Gardens Theatre on January 13-17, 2023.

Presented by the same team behind The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child, Room on the Broom returns with songs, laughs and scary fun for children aged three years and older. Grown-ups will also be entertained.

Pat Malone’s Magic Garden

Do you believe in the power of imagination? Pat Malone’s Magic Garden is a fun-fuelled exploration of creativity for families on at the Brisbane Powerhouse from January 19–22, 2023.

It fuses physical theatre, circus and dance with good old-fashioned ‘Aussie yarn’. The show is a colourful and iconic piece about the nature of reality and the power of imagination.

Storytime Ballet: The Sleeping Beauty

The Sleeping Beauty, an is an enchanting and interactive Storytime Ballet experience. Suitable for children aged three years and older, The Sleeping Beauty tells the story of a beautiful princess who must sleep for 100 years until woken by true love’s kiss.

Andy’s Amazing Adventures

It’s been four years, but ABC Kids and CBeebies star Andy Day is back! He’s bringing his time travels to Australia with live show Andy’s Amazing Adventures at the Brisbane Powerhouse in late-January 2023. The BAFTA-nominated presenter and star of popular children’s shows Andy’s Wild Adventures, Andy’s Dinosaur Adventures, Andy’s Prehistoric Adventures and Andy and the Band is on a mission to thrill and entertain in this live adventure. He’ll have some help from familiar faces, new friends and possibly even you!
