Ballet, music and storytelling add magic to Brisbane winter

Looking for something truly magical to do with the kids these school holidays? Queensland Ballet has just the ticket – quite literally – to enchant little ones and spark their love for music and dance.

From 27 June to 5 July, Peter and the Wolf will leap onto the stage at the Talbot Theatre, located in Queensland Ballet’s beautifully restored Thomas Dixon Centre in West End. This joyful reimagining of the classic musical fairytale is part of the company’s My First Ballet series, designed especially for young audiences.

Choreographed by Greg Horsman and narrated by Hugh Parker, Peter and the Wolf blends vivid storytelling, charming choreography and live music in a bite-sized performance that’s just right for curious kids. Each character in the tale is represented by a different orchestral instrument — with a clarinet for the cat, an oboe for the duck, and the string section bringing Peter himself to life.

Adding an extra layer of wonder, the show will feature live musicians on stage, thanks to a special collaboration with Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. It’s a rare chance for children to see and hear how music and movement work together to tell a story — and maybe even inspire a few future dancers or musicians in the audience.

“This production offers a powerful learning opportunity,” said choreographer Greg Horsman. “Our young audiences will be able to connect the sound of each instrument to the characters they see on stage. It’s a joyful, educational experience that inspires a lifelong love of both music and dance.”

Queensland Ballet’s Artistic Director, Ivan Gil-Ortega, added, “Greg Horsman’s playful choreography offers a fresh and engaging take on this beloved story, honouring the original version choreographed by our founder Charles Lisner OBE, while delighting today’s audiences with colour, charm and creativity.”

Queensland Ballet school holiday workshops

The fun doesn’t stop at the curtain call. Queensland Ballet is offering interactive workshops for children aged 2–5 and 6–12, giving little ones the chance to explore the story through movement and creativity. And after the final performance on 5 July, families can stay for a special post-show Q&A with Queensland Ballet’s artists and dancers.

Need a snack break? Enjoy a bite to eat before or after the show at Tom’s Kitchen or Layla Restaurant, both located inside the Thomas Dixon Centre, with special kids’ menus on offer.

To make the magic last, exclusive Peter and the Wolf merchandise will be available to purchase, including a themed charm bracelet, water bottle and children’s t-shirt.
