What’s on for Brisbane kids and families – June 10 2023

Three cheers for the weekend! We made it… Just. From Friday, June 10 through to Sunday, June 12 you can explore a bunch of weird and wacky exhibitions, shop at local markets, and embrace the perfect winter weather. (Who doesn’t love these sunny, crisp days?!) Here are our favourite family and kid-friendly events and activities across Brisbane…

Light up the night sky

Multicultural Australia’s Luminous Lantern Parade is on this Friday, June 10. The event lights up the streets of South Bank in a stunning display of support for Queensland’s multicultural communities and newest Queenslanders — including migrants, refugees, international students and people seeking asylum. The spectacular lantern procession starts at 6pm near the Flowstate at South Bank. The walk ends at South Bank Piazza where you’ll be treated to a vibrant World Music concert.

Wacky, wild and wonderful exhibitions

The Great & Grand Rumpus exhibition at State Library of Queensland has you stepping into a wild world of wonder, wackiness and whimsy. Explore large cardboard sculptures scaling more than 4.5 meters high and watch as they are brought to life by interactive digital projections. Get hands on and craft your own mythical creation, allowing your inner child to experience the limitless imagination of make-believe places. You can also see how more than 1,000 innovative storytellers just like you have crafted and sculpted mythical worlds and creatures based on ideas workshopped by kids over the last 18 months.

Check out the Museum of Brisbane’s current exhibition. The home-grown Making Place: 100 Views of Brisbane is where museum-goers can look at more than 100 artworks depicting some of the city’s most iconic scenes. The wonderful exhibition features works from renowned artists including Margaret Olley, Vida Lahey and Judy Watson. There is also an atmospheric soundscape by Artist in Residence Lawrence English.

The stunning immersive play experience, Imaginaria combined audio-visual art, inflatable architecture, light installations and futuristic gamification suitable for all ages. Step inside, slip off your shoes and engage with AI projects, sensor-triggered LED waves and giant silk parachute canopies. There are also cosmic gardens, an anti-gravity sunset, an electronic hall of mirrors and a digital wishing well that whispers your greatest desires.

Counting the beat

Come and enjoy the great outdoors with your little ones while you move and make music together. The kids music beat groups at Wittonga Park will allow you to share a special time with other parents, while helping your little ones learn and grow through musical play and movement. Take home tips for how to keep grooving and creating musical moments at home provided.

If dancing is more your thing, you’re going to want to check out the Mad Dance Festival at Metro Arts. Commencing May 29, the festival is a two-week roster of awe-inspiring performances, creative projects, dance battles, workshops and more! This weekend’s events include Betwixt, an inspirational and energetic story of five top street dancers; and Distinct, a one-woman show exploring masculine and feminine energy. Both recommended for those aged 15 years and older. Suitable for all ages though is the Shakedown: Free community dance classes being held at West Village precinct. For more information, visit the Metro Arts website.
