Starting school is a significant milestone in a child’s life, and school readiness plays a vital role in ensuring a smooth transition. But what does “school readiness” mean? It’s about equipping children with foundational academic, social, and emotional skills that prepare them to thrive in a structured learning environment.
In Moffat Beach, Sunshine Coast, Appleberry Co School Readiness is making waves as a home-based business dedicated to school readiness. Run by Michelle Cavalier, a passionate teacher with over 20 years of experience, this small but mighty program offers group sessions for children aged 3 to 5. We sat down with Michelle to learn more about school readiness and preparing young learners for ‘big school’.
Q: What sets Appleberry Co School Readiness apart from other early childhood programs?
Michelle: The key difference is our small group sizes—just five children per session. This allows me to provide personalised attention, which isn’t always possible in larger kindergarten settings. Our sessions focus on pre-reading skills, such as letter sounds, alphabet recognition, phonological awareness, and pre-writing skills, such as fine motor development and letter formation.
We also emphasise oral language, encouraging children to recount events, describe objects, and even give mini-presentations. Basic numeracy, including number recognition and counting, is another cornerstone of the program.
Another key part of the program is our focus on resilience, confidence, and emotional regulation. Each session starts with a check-in on feelings, using the Zones of Regulation framework to help children understand and manage their emotions.

Understanding and regulating emotions is an important part of school readiness.
Q: What’s your approach to structuring sessions?
Michelle: Routine is critical for young children. My sessions follow the same structure every week so that children know what to expect and feel secure. While we incorporate play and breaks, the focus is on structured learning, preparing kids for the expectations of a school environment.
Q: What age group do you cater to?
Michelle: We welcome children aged 3.5 to 5 years, focusing on the year before they start prep. It’s ideal if a child can attend for a full year to experience the complete program, though we also offer term-by-term enrollment.

Q: Do you offer any holiday programs?
Michelle: Yes! During the summer break, I run a three-week refresher course. It’s designed to reinforce what children have learned and get them back into learning mode before school starts.
Q: What inspired you to start Appleberry Co School Readiness?
Michelle: After 23 years in teaching, primarily with younger children, I wanted to create a space where I could focus on my passion for early education whilst also being present as a mum to my daughter. Watching children grow and develop confidence in their abilities is incredibly rewarding, and I love being part of that journey.

Practising writing and fine motor skills are an essential part of school readiness.
