Construction starts on first state high school in Aura

Construction has officially commenced on the first state high school in Aura. Located in Baringa, the first suburb of Stockland’s masterplanned Aura community on the Sunshine Coast, the $115 million school aims to open to Years 7 and 8 for the 2021 school year.

Baringa High School will be the first secondary school in the Aura community. It will have a strong focus on science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Josh Sondergeld, Stockland Project Director, said the construction marked the next step in catering for the community’s growing education needs.

“Aura is committed to nurturing young minds and emerging talent, Mr Sondergeld said. “With 10 new families moving to Aura every week, the school is a very welcome addition to our growing number of learning facilities.”

Strategically located in the heart of the community on the corner of Griffith Place and Baringa Drive, the school will be positioned adjacent to the Baringa Sports Complex and Baringa State Primary School.

Queensland builder FKG Group is leading the construction of the High School. Enrolments will open after the principal is appointed later this year.

Aura residents Stacey and Peter Tovey who moved from Canada in 2018 along with their two children Jayson, 11, and Paige, 9 are looking forward to the opening of the High School.

Jayson will be among the first cohort of students to attend the school when it opens in 2021, with both Jayson and Paige currently attending Baringa State Primary School.

“Education was the first thing on our minds when we arrived from Canada and the focus on STEM learning at Baringa was a huge part of the reason why we bought at Aura,” Mrs Tovey said.

“The liveability of being able to walk to everything was also very important,” she continued. “We’re so happy to hear that the High School is opening in time for our son to start Year 7.”

The new state high school in Aura complements the growing range of education and learning facilities available in Baringa. These include Baringa Early Learning Centre and Baringa State Primary School. Other facilities proposed include a Catholic High School and an urban university located within the Aura city centre.
