So, you’ve made the decision to enrol your child in a private school. But have you considered whether choosing a specific year for the switch is essential? Mr Craig Merritt, the new principal of John Paul College, says that enrolling your child in a key entry year can provide them with a stronger educational foundation.
Mr Craig Merritt joined John Paul College in January 2023. He brought with him a commitment to empower young people to develop a strong sense of positive character, be optimistic, excel and ultimately be an instrument of positive influence in their communities.
“We are a College that is serious about academic outcomes. Our rich and diverse co-curricular program provides a quality and balanced all-round approach to our educational offering,” says Principal Merritt.
Located 20 minutes south of Brisbane’s CBD, John Paul College (JPC) is one of Queensland’s largest independent Early Learning to Year 12 co-educational schools. The JPC campus features extensive natural bushland and modern facilities with cutting-edge technology programs and wide-ranging cultural and sporting opportunities.
“JPC creates opportunities and pathways for all students to become world ready within our inclusive community. We want them to be authentic young people who demonstrate responsibility and respect for others, and we want to set them up for future success,” says Principal Merritt.
The unique offerings of a Brisbane private school
As well as being Early Learning to Year 12, John Paul College also has an International College on campus with students from more than 45 different nationalities.
“Our culturally diverse community is a remarkable reflection of the broader Australian population. And I am intensely proud of our harmonious and compassionate JPC family as we respect and nurture our multi-faith community,” says Mr Merritt.
“We know that being prepared for the future—setting goals, choosing a pathway, overcoming obstacles and conquering challenges—gives your child a head start for their life ahead. JPC presents your child with the ultimate preparation for that future, for the pursuit of their future self. We are proud to help prepare our students for their quest to change the world and make a difference.”
The key entry years for enrolling in private school
Years 1 to 3: Start with the Right Foundations
Develop your child’s curiosity and love of learning by building solid foundations through the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) at JPC, commencing in Prep. Our Primary school focuses on developing students who are motivated by the wonder of learning.
Years 5 to 6: A Smooth Transition to Secondary School
Get a head start for transition into Secondary school. Entry in Year 5 will provide an exciting journey into the world of entrepreneurship. Where students enhance their analytical and critical thinking skills and build the foundations for design and innovation. This will continue with them throughout their Secondary journey.
Years 7 to 9: Thrive in Secondary School
In Secondary, students study a broad range of subjects, following the Australian curriculum. They develop subject-specific skills and make links across and between disciplines. We encourage innovative thinking and skills in creativity, design thinking, problem-solving and reflection.
Year 10: A Head Start to Senior Studies
Students start exploring the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) program in Year 10. This means they can gain an advantage in their senior studies while also getting access to career guidance and the opportunity to personalise their subject choices to suit them.
