Having survived the Easter festivities, another four-day weekend is upon us. The Gold Coast is brimming with events set to entertain you and your children over this April 22-25 long weekend. You’ll be set with film festivals, park parties, STEM opportunities, exhibitions and markets. Let’s not forget the Anzac Day services. We hope you weren’t planning on taking it easy!
Here’s our wrap of the best family and kid-friendly events and activities in and around the Gold Coast this weekend …
To market, to market
Take the little ones to the Hide & Seek Children’s Market
Spark the imagination of your Little Ones by exploring the pretty homemade treasures at the Hide and Seek Children’s Market in Robina on Sunday, April 24. A dedicated children’s market, it is packed with plenty of stalls showcasing beautifully crafted clothing, accessories, toys, furnishings and décor. Kitted out with plenty of cute market finds, your kids will be fit for a fashion show, or a special visit to the grandies. There will also be live music, face painting and a petting farm to keep your Little Ones occupied for hours!
Got pre-loved treasures? Trade them in at the ethical swap market
Do you have some clothes in excellent condition that are constantly missing out on their chance in the spotlight? Perhaps you have some funky household items like frames, cushions, vases and prints that don’t fit your current aesthetic? Instead of adding them to the cupboard to collect dust, why not head to the ethical swap market at Morena on Sunday, April 24? When you’re there, you’ll just need to pay $10 to receive 10 tokens, which you can use to pay for your brand new, pre-loved items! The best bit? All unwanted clothes and shows will be repurposed at Upapparel.
Load up on fresh fruit and vege, arts and crafts
When it comes to shopping fresh, the Gold Coast markets have you sorted. There’s an array of artisan-inspired, one-of-a-kind fashion and fresh produce markets sprinkled across the suburbs. This weekend, we encourage you to check out the Burleigh Farmers Market on Saturday, April 23 from 7am. It’s your local community market for all things fresh! Farm produce, organic fruit and vegetables, gourmet foods, meat, fish, deli products and hot coffee and bakery treats! You’ll also find beautiful fresh flowers, plants, arts and crafts, antiques, collectibles and much more! Also on Saturday from 6am to 11am is the Helensvale Farmers Market. Pick your way through fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, health food and fashion curated and crafted by passionate local artisans, micro-manufacturers and growers.
The HOTA Farmers and Artisan Markets at the Gold Coast Home of the Arts is on Sunday, April 24 from 6am to 11:30am. Load up the hamper with organic fruit and vegetables, indulge in goodies that are baked, smoked, cured and crafted with a paddock-to-plate philosophy in mind.
This weekend is also a good opportunity to check out some Mother’s Day gifts at the Gold Coast Potters Association Mother’s Day Art Market. On Sunday, April 24 from 8am to 1pm, the market features more than 30 stalls with pottery, jewellery, arts and more. There are also demonstrations for those interested.
For the sporty ones
If you like watching live sport, take the family to the Gold Coast Suns vs Brisbane Lions AFL match at Metricon Stadium. Gates open at 2:15pm, which is ideal for getting there, finding your seat, getting your snacks and drinks, and goading the opposition with some friendly banter. The game’s first bounce is at 4:10pm. You can get your tickets from Ticketek.
Sunday, April 24 also marks the start of the 11th annual Gold Coast Running Festival. There are a range of distances available. Half marathons and 10km jaunts for running fanatics. And leisurely 5km, 2.5km and 1km options for those that prefer a slightly less intense start to their day.
For the creative minds
From life-sized animals to fashion and fantasy, discover the biggest and best LEGO creations at Bricktionary: The Interactive LEGO® brick Exhibition. It showcases some of the largest and latest brick models, including some never-before-shown from the television show LEGO Masters Australia. You can get hands-on at HOTA.
Join the popular Weekend Robotics and Coding Club at Robina Community Centre from Saturday, April 23. Run by STEAM Powered Kids, this program offers a great robotics and coding curriculum. It provides computer science, engineering and coding projects for school-aged children. It’s fully hands-on and is a great way to inspire kids to pursue STEAM careers in the future.
Pay your respects at an Anzac Day service
This year marks the 107th anniversary of Australian troops landing in Gallipoli. Pay your respects at one of the many Anzac Day services across the Gold Coast. It’s been two years since the last dawn service, but this year it returns to Elephant Rock at the Currumbin RSL. You can commemorate servicemen and women while watching the sunrise — it’s a truly emotional experience. You can find the full list of Anzac Day services here.
