We’re here to help you get out and enjoy the winter sunshine on the Gold Coast this weekend. There’s always enough action happening to keep the whole family entertained. Here’s our list of the best things to do for the weekend…
Festivals and family fun
This is your last weekend to enjoy one of Australia’s leading and most exciting site-specific contemporary arts displays. Bleach* Festival wraps up on Sunday, August 21. The festival celebrates the Gold Coast’s most dynamic and adventurous artists. Renowned and international collaborators engage with a broad audience through a range of events at some of the Gold Coast’s world-famous natural locations. Roller Coaster, Unsettle, Acoustic Life of Sheds, Volo: Dreams of Flight and Last Light are all to be experienced this weekend.
On Saturday, August 20 there’s the Village Roadshow Theme Parks Family Fun Day at Aquis Park. This event is an opportunity for you and the kids to meet your favourite stars and characters from Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World, Australian Outback Spectacular and Paradise Country. There will also be market stalls, pony rides, jumping castles, face painting and more!
Guanaba Rural Fire Brigade’s family fun day is back on. Guanaba Family Fun Day on Sunday, August 21 will have a range of free entertainment including music from Jimmy Barnes’ nephew Matt Schlam, performances by the Be Smart Pet Show, Wild Animal Rangers and local dance schools. There will be free inflatable rides for children to enjoy and face painting, reptile display and craft activities to join in.
Head to HOTA
Check out the HOTA Collects exhibition in Galleries 2, 3 and 4. This is a showcase of more than 100 works from HOTA collection and reflects key developments in Australian art over the past 50 years. It includes abstract, feminist art, Indigenous art, ceramics and 21st century photography.
You’ll also find Postcards from the Edge in the Children’s Gallery. Artist Martin Edge’s colourful paintings are brought to life in an inclusive space for fun and adventure. This is a free exhibition.
See Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary as you’ve never seen it before — after dark! The Currumbin Wildlife Twilight Tour takes you behind the scenes and through the Sanctuary. Get up close to the nocturnal residents, such as the cheeky Tasmanian Devils who are most active after dark. Have fun spotting crocodiles, koalas and kangaroos. You’ll also learn more about the history of the Gold Coast’s First Nations people with a spectacular light display. This event is on every Friday and Saturday night throughout July and until the end of August.
Load up on fresh fruit and vege, arts and crafts
When it comes to shopping fresh, the Gold Coast markets have you sorted. There’s an array of artisan-inspired, one-of-a-kind fashion and fresh produce markets sprinkled across the suburbs. This weekend, we encourage you to check out the Moonlight Night Market on Friday and Saturday at Dreamworld, or the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary Night Market where you’ll have access to live music, good food and refreshing drinks. If ethnic food stalls from across the Gold Coast is your thing, check out the Miami Marketta every Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 8pm.
The Burleigh Farmers Market on Saturday, August 21 from 7am is your local community market for all things fresh! Farm produce, organic fruit and vegetables, gourmet foods, meat, fish, deli products and hot coffee and bakery treats! You’ll also find beautiful fresh flowers, plants, arts and crafts, antiques, collectibles and much more! Also on Saturday from 6am to 11am is the Helensvale Farmers Market. Pick your way through fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, health food and fashion curated and crafted by passionate local artisans, micro-manufacturers and growers. On Sunday, August 21, head to Miami State High for the Organic Gold Coast Farmers Market. This super chill market stocks nothing but sustainably sourced, spray and chemical-free produce.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, events may be postponed or cancelled at the last minute. We do our best to ensure our events are up to date, but be sure to check the organiser’s own event page for the most current updates.
