As everyday costs are spiralling and the family budget has to stretch further each week, we are all feeling the financial pinch right now. *Strikes iceberg lettuce off the shopping list.*
Well, put your wallet away, as we’ve rounded up eight completely free things to do with kids this weekend on the Sunshine Coast.
Free creative workshops
Horizon Festival sadly comes to an end on Sunday, August 28 but there’s still plenty of time to take advantage of their free Horizon Kids: Family Hours.
Every morning the Wonderland Spiegeltent at Cotton Tree will be commandeered by kids and their parents or carers. Imagine a garden full of paint, glue and beanbags, and a tent full of circus, music and comedy. A space thoughtfully curated for the Sunshine Coast’s little artists to have a laugh and dirty their fingernails. Create a coastal collage in an activity designed by The Butiner or get messy making clay animal figurines. Colour, make music, or just chill out in the reading nook.
There are also free visual art installations in Cotton Tree Park to explore.
Free dinosaur play
Get set for some roar-some free family fun on Sunday, September 4, at the opening of the brand-new Dino Park in Nirimba. Kids will be entertained by a family-friendly DJ and two lifelike baby dinosaur puppets – Bill the Baby T-Rex and Kylie the Ankylosaurus.
A series of mini dino-eggs has been creatively placed for younger children to explore, while older kids can uncover unique fossil designs in the archaeological digging pit. Plus Hunter, a 14-foot-long roaring Tyrannosaurus rex puppet will be handing out lollies!
Free mystery to solve
Love a little mystery? Be a detective for the day at the Museum Mystery Madness! Visit one or more of the Sunshine Coast’s six regional museum during September and answer quiz questions for your chance to win a $100 voucher.
Enjoy free entry to Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct, Eumundi Museum and Landsborough Museum. Entry to Buderim Pioneer Cottage, Kenilworth Museum and Nambour Museum is $5 per adult and $1 per child. (Still cheaper than the lettuce.)
The Sunshine Coast Art Prize exhibition is now open, with 40 stunning artworks. Explore the exhibition with the Kids Art Trail and check out the gallery website for cool activities to create at home. Entry to the gallery is free!
Free animal encounters
Get up close and personal with local species of flying foxes with Jeannie from Bat Rescue Inc.
Night Creatures allows you to discover the secret life of flying foxes and the native animals who depend on them for survival. Learn how they enhance the environment by pollinating and spreading the seeds of important trees. Find out more about our local night creatures and what to do if you come in contact with them. Tours are free, registration essential.
Free indoor play
There’s free fun every Tuesday for toddlers and their grown ups at Noosa Civic’s Kid’s Mornings. Each week the morning is themed. Held near the play space.
Free biking and walking trails
From exploring a community playground loop with your toddler to discovering a hidden hinterland trail and swimming hole with an adventurous tween-ager, Adventure Sunshine Coast has more than 200 free adventures covering walking, cycling, paddling and riding trails right across the region!
Perfect for children under five years old, there’s free music and sensory play activities for toddlers on Tuesday, September 6 at Caloundra Shopping Centre. Families are encouraged to dress up to theme and join in on the fun! There’s also one complimentary coffee card for parents/guardians per participating child. Bookings are essential.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, events may be postponed or cancelled at the last minute. We do our best to ensure our events are up to date, but be sure to check the organiser’s own event page for the most current updates.
