From infants to Olympians at Rackley Swimming

As the world basks in the afterglow of the Paris Olympics, there’s a renewed appreciation for the power of sport to unite and inspire. With the 2032 Brisbane Olympics on the horizon, this unifying force will continue to ignite the passions of Queensland families for years to come.

Swimming, in particular, captivates audiences. Races are often decided by the smallest margins, evoking emotional reactions from fans everywhere. This surge of interest has significantly boosted the swimming industry, and Rackley Swimming stands at the forefront of this enthusiasm.

A journey from infancy to elite athleticism

Rackley Swimming offers programs for all ages and abilities, from swim safety for infants as young as three months to training for elite athletes competing on the world stage. This comprehensive approach ensures that everyone can experience the joy and benefits of swimming regardless of their starting point.

“There’s no age limit to gaining confidence in the water,” says Jay Clarke, Managing Director at Rackley Swimming. “We have infants who began at three months old and are still in our program. Looking towards the 2032 Olympics, Koa Hurst, son of Ironman Ky Hurst, is one of these dedicated young athletes who is a testament to this journey.”

A proven track record of success

Rackley Swimming’s reputation for excellence is well-earned. With 34 learn-to-swim venues across Queensland and New South Wales, this long-standing swim school has consistently produced world-class athletes, including six members of the Australian Dolphins team that went to the Paris Olympics.

Jay remarks, “World stages do wonders for the entire sporting industry. They bring our country together, and swimming is just one of those sports that gets you off your seat, shouting and fist-pumping. Wins are determined by milliseconds and millimetres. We are lucky to have provided the Dolphins with six Rackley athletes and are proud to be a part of their incredible journey.”

Legacy of champions: Ky Hurst and the next generation

Ky Hurst, a legend in open water and Ironman competitions, reflects on the unique environment at Rackley Swimming, particularly the Miami squads. “We had six athletes at the Olympic Games in Paris. For the younger swimmers, seeing the dedication and work ethic required to succeed at the highest levels is an incredible opportunity.”

Ky’s son, Koa, also trains with the Rackley Miami squads, aspiring to continue his father’s legacy. “I like getting in the pool with my mates and training hard so I can maybe get ready for the 2032 Olympics. I want to be an Ironman; I like distance swimming,” Koa shares.

Attracting international excellence

Rackley Swimming’s Miami pool has long been a magnet for elite swimmers worldwide. Ky recalls, “I’ve been swimming here since the mid-‘90s. We’ve had elite international swimmers like Michael Phelps and Grant Hackett training here and superstar Ironmen like Trevor Hende. I grew up with Grant Hackett here for multiple years. We absolutely belted it out, which was fantastic. We had the Giaan Rooneys that have come through this pool. The Gold Coast is the ultimate venue, and it’s no surprise that Southeast Queensland will host the 2032 Olympics.”

Looking ahead

As the region prepares for the 2032 Olympics, Rackley Swimming’s potential to contribute to future successes is immense. Koa, who will be 19 by then, reflects on his aspirations: “Train more, get better, and be prepared.” His father’s advice on moderation and commitment underscores the balanced approach Rackley promotes.

Rackley Swimming’s uniqueness lies in its ability to nurture swimmers from their first splash to the podiums of international competition. “We are committed to excellence, our communities, and the development of future Aussie champions,” says Jay Clarke. “As the Paris Olympics inspire the next generation, Rackley Swimming stands ready to support and celebrate the journey of every swimmer.”

Tips for aspiring Australian champions

From Damien Jones, Rackley National Team Coach & Olympic Level Coach

1. Perfect your technique

Focus on form: Efficient swimming begins with perfecting your technique. Pay attention to body position, arm strokes, and kicking. Aim for a streamlined body to reduce drag, ensuring smooth and consistent strokes. Practice specific drills like catch-up drills for arms or flutter kicks for legs to build muscle memory and enhance overall form.

2. Mix up your workouts

Variety is key: Diversify your workouts by alternating between different strokes. This approach works different muscle groups and improves overall strength and flexibility. Include various drills, kick and pull sets and sprints, to keep workouts interesting and challenging. A varied routine prevents boredom and helps develop a versatile swimming skill set.

3. Set realistic goals

Aim high, but stay grounded: Setting achievable goals is crucial for improvement. Start with small, attainable objectives that lead to larger goals. Celebrate every achievement, no matter how small, to stay motivated. Whether it’s a few seconds off your PB or challenging your skills with a new stroke, each step forward is progress.

4. Listen to your body

Know when to push and when to rest: Recognise the difference between pushing your limits and overtraining. Pay attention to your body’s signals, and don’t ignore signs of fatigue or injury. Rest and recovery are as important as training. Ensure adequate sleep, nutrition, and hydration to support your body’s demands.

5. Fitness and fun

Enjoy the process: Swimming should be enjoyable and fulfilling, on top of fitness and swimming fast. The love for the sport is what will keep you coming back, even on tough days.
