It is commonly known that being creative is FUN. However, this leading Sunshine Coast art school is a space for young individuals and teens to develop self-confidence through artistic self-expression.

Art School in Coolum and Nambour

Chony Bowden grew up in Nambour and studied to become a QCT registered teacher with a dream of travelling the world. She accumulated over two decades of experience in the arts and education sector, both internationally and around Australia. Chony returned to the Sunshine Coast three years ago with a dream to use her experience to provide the youth of the Sunshine Coast with opportunities to ignite their creativity and sense of self-belief – something that didn’t exist when she was a child. And so Chony’s Art Room – Art School in Coolum and Nambour – was born.

Sessions at Chony’s Art Room are project-based and can take up to three weeks to complete. Students are shown methods to use each material and are then encouraged to express their individuality while in creation mode.

“My students are guided to think creatively, understanding the elements of art and applying them to create individual works of art, rather than trying to re-create images and artworks by artists that already exist,” explains Chony.

Engaging in an arts-based practice can greatly improve people’s feelings of self-worth and general well-being.

“As the world is getting busier and general anxiety is increasing, focused time for creativity supports moments of mindfulness, self-expression, emotional release and calm,” says Chony.

At Chony’s Art Room and Art School, all artists have the opportunity to explore a large variety of art materials, including clay, watercolour, acrylic paintings, sketching, printmaking, textile arts, sculpture, nature-based and recycled art.

“I provide a wide variety of materials for students to create with so that they begin to understand that being ‘creative’ is not just paintings and sketching and that the possibilities for living a creative life are endless.”
