The temperatures might be dropping, but the Sunshine Coast average is a beautiful 21C. The days are — more often than not — sunny and crisp, which makes this weekend an ideal to get out and explore. There are a number of family and kid-friendly happenings this weekend across the Sunshine Coast. Here are our favourites…
It’s show time!
On Friday June 10, the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show kicks off at Nambour Showgrounds. The event, which has been going for more than 100 years, showcases the impressive agricultural industries of the region. Over three massive days, more than 30,000 visitors will pass through the gates. In what promises to be a fun-filled family day out, you can enjoy entertainment, rides, local agriculture and produce. Get your Dagwood Dog and Fairy Floss, ride the Ferris wheel. Check out the dairy and beef cattle and learn a thing or two from the Education stage.
For the foodies
Looking for a family-friendly event with free entertainment and delicious food? Head to Jack Morgan Park in Coolum on Saturday, June 11 for Salty Saturdays. There’s a ‘Grom Zone’ full of activities for kids. You’ll also find a licensed bar, live performances and a great community vibe. Local businesses will also showcase their products.
Of course, if you’re at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, head to Palmview’s Village Green on Saturday, June 11 to celebrate this growing community’s first birthday. Located in the heart of Village Green, the free family day out offers a host of fun activities. Kids can take part in the Egg & Spoon races, Tug of War and sack races, as well as play Chess and Jenga. There will also be a circus and kids can have fun trying out the stilts. A Paint & Plant workshop will give children and adults, the chance to paint a mini terracotta pot and plant their choice of vegetable or flower seedling. You can keep it as a Village Green memento. Enjoy the atmosphere with a free sausage sizzle and refreshments accompanied by music, umbrellas, picnic tables and blankets in the shade.
This Friday, June 10, celebrate island food and culture with Island Night at NightQuarter, Birtinya. It will be a fun-filled night of Polynesian entertainment and food, celebrating the beauty of our diverse Pacific cultures. The fun starts at 4pm. There’s also a Fire Spectacular at 6:30pm you won’t want to miss!
To market, to market
If wandering the markets is more your thing, head to the Sunshine Coast Collective Markets on Sunday, June 12 at Coolum Primary School. There’s plenty of food vendors, so you’ll have loads to eat. You’ll also find a good cup of coffee to keep you going. Stroll through the stalls of local artisans, foodies, growers and musicians. It’s a gorgeous morning out with the family.
This weekend is also the Noosa Kids & Baby Market at Coolum Beach. You’ll find a mix of stalls, including those with pre-loved items at this event. Many local businesses will be selling their wares, plus you can also find vendors providing health and wellness for families and mums (for those expecting and those postpartum). Grab yourself a bargain or enjoy seeing what’s on offer.
There are a range of markets across the Sunshine Coast including the Marcoola Market every Friday evening (4pm to 8pm) and Saturday morning (8am to 12pm); the original Eumundi Market (the biggest and best art and craft market in Australia) on Saturdays from 7am to 2pm; and the Caloundra Street Fair each Sunday from 8am to 1pm. Also on Sundays are the Imbil Markets (8am to 1pm) run by the Mary Valley Chamber of Commerce; the Fisherman’s Road Markets (6am to 12pm) run by the Mooloolaba Lions Club; and the Maleny Sunday Markets at the RSL Hall from 8am to 2pm.
