Shade sail rollout across Brisbane playgrounds ensures cool play for kids

Brisbane Council is entering the final phase of its three-year accelerated program to install shade at 150 Brisbane playgrounds, ensuring Brisbane’s youngest residents are protected from heat and harmful UV rays.

Construction of the final shade sails is now underway, with works on the last 34 playgrounds scheduled for completion by the end of June 2025. Since the Sun Safe Suburban Playgrounds program began in 2022, shade sails have been installed at 116 playgrounds across the city.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner highlighted the importance of the program, saying, “As a father of four, I know it’s critical to keep kids shielded from the harsh UV rays, and the steps we take to protect them now will hopefully help them later in life.”

The shade sails have been carefully designed to cover and cool the entire footprint of each playground, providing relief during the hottest parts of the day. Upon completion of the program, all 150 playgrounds will offer a cooler, safer environment for children to enjoy outdoor play.

“Playgrounds create more to see and do in our suburbs, and the Sun Safe Suburban Playground upgrades mean kids can stay cool and out of the sun while playing outdoors,” Lord Mayor Schrinner said. “This investment is a key part of our ongoing commitment to invest in our suburbs and continually improve our public spaces to create an even better lifestyle for Brisbane.”

As part of the program, shade was delivered to 50 playgrounds in the first year, 66 in the second, and work on the final 34 playgrounds has now commenced. These final upgrades will begin with work at the following playgrounds:

  • Perkins Street Playground at Nell Jones OAM Park in Sandgate
  • Gum Nut Nook Playground in McDowall
  • Laurina Crescent Playground in McDowall
  • Warburton Park Playground in Virginia
  • Biran Street Playground at Bowie’s Flat Park in Camp Hill
  • Barramundi Street Playground in Manly West

Looking ahead, the Council has committed to delivering shade to additional playgrounds as part of budgeted upgrades.

“This investment is a key part of our ongoing commitment to invest in our suburban and continually improve our public spaces to create an even better lifestyle for Brisbane,” the Lord Mayor added.

The Sun Safe Suburban Playgrounds program is a crucial step toward ensuring Brisbane’s playgrounds remain inviting and safe spaces for families, even during the hottest months of the year.
