As the Sunshine Coast enters its third lockdown, local clubs and organisations are continuing to be innovative in providing their members ongoing classes and support.
Following the extremely disappointing news last weekend, when Ausfunk Cheer & Dance along with hundreds of athletes from around Queensland attended their first LIVE competition for the season, only to be sent home three hours later due to the snap lock, Ausfunk’s team of dedicated coaches snapped to it in setting up classes online via ZOOM.
Ausfunk’s Director, Hayley Green’s first priority was checking on the kids. “Adults are all busy worrying about the adult responsibilities concerning Covid and the kids are just wondering when they are going to see their friends again,” said Hayley. “So, Ausfunk Zoom is a way of connecting with them and answering any of their funny little questions they may have.”
Second priority for Hayley was the further competitions coming up this year. “We have put so much effort into training, and families have committed financially. We want to keep our momentum going so teams go through their routines virtually via Zoom!”
“We became Zoom experts the last time we were in lockdown,” Hayley added. “We found some hugely positive results including getting to sit back as a coach and watch individuals without the distractions of an entire class. This, in return, has given us an opportunity to fix things that we wouldn’t normally see. We have also found that the kids open up more about things they don’t understand when they are in their own homes. This is a perfect way for our coaches to reach those who don’t normally speak up. We also include some fun themes, like bring your pet or come in your PJs. We also find that sometimes the whole family gets involved, which gives some light relief amongst the situation.”
We asked some of the athletes from Ausfunk how they felt about having classes via Zoom:
“I find the zoom lessons at Ausfunk fun. We can still socialise and connect with our team mates, even during lockdown. Our coaches are amazing as they make us work hard but also always find the fun in everything we do.” – Sienna
“It is a fun way of learning and it was good to see my friends again. I got to show my puppy off to all my friends” – Maddy
“Being on Zoom classes with my AUSFUNK teachers (family) has helped me feel connected to my dance and cheer friends. As well as keeping up with my training I have been given advice and tips about self care and how to look after ME during lockdown.” – Ella Bea
“I like to see my friends from Ausfunk on Zoom and socialise which is really fun for me” – Taylor
