Top 10 Things to Do with Kids These April School Holidays (Rain or Shine)

April is one of the most comfortable months to explore South East Queensland. Having a mix of outdoor plans and a few indoor ideas ready simply gives you flexibility to keep the fun going in any kind of weather.

With plenty of options on how to spend quality time with the kids, it doesn’t matter if you’re planning a big day out, hosting visiting relatives or just looking for something different to do mid-week.

The key is to keep things simple, local and realistic. A few well-planned outings balanced with slower days at home can make the April school holidays feel full without feeling exhausting.

Below are 10 easy, family-friendly ideas, including five outdoor adventures to make the most of those sunny autumn days and five indoor options for when you feel like slowing down or switching things up.

Outdoor Adventure Ideas

April days are warm, the humidity has eased, and it’s the perfect weather for beach trips, playground stops and easy day adventures.

If you’re keen to make the most of it, these outdoor ideas are a great place to start.

1. Playground Trail Day Out

If your kids love playgrounds (and honestly, what kid doesn’t?), turn a regular park visit into a mini holiday mission. Pick two or three great playgrounds and make a day of it.

On the Gold Coast, Broadwater Parklands in Southport is always a winner, with plenty of space to run, shaded play areas and picnic spots right by the water. Over on the Sunshine Coast, Cotton Tree Park in Maroochydore is another favourite. The place offers a playground, the river, and the beach all within walking distance of each other.

Brisbane families can’t go wrong with South Bank where the playground and riverside paths make it easy to spend a full morning without anyone getting bored.

Pack snacks, bring scooters, and let the kids rate each playground like tiny travel critics.

2. Beach Morning + Picnic Lunch

April is one of the best months for a beach day in SE QLD. It’s warm, but not scorching, and the water is still inviting.

For Sunshine Coast families, Mooloolaba Beach is perfect for kids given patrolled swimming. Cafés are close by for a quick coffee and light snacking. Kings Beach in Caloundra is another great option, especially with the oceanfront saltwater pool and nearby playground.

On the Gold Coast, Burleigh Heads is hard to beat. You can swim, explore the headland walk, then settle in under the trees for a picnic.

And if you’re planning a proper beach day with all the gear — shade tent, eskies, scooters, maybe even grandparents coming along — it can actually be worth looking into options to rent a car for the day so you’ve got the space to make sure everyone stays comfortable.

3. Scavenger Hunt On A Nature Walk

Bushwalks with kids don’t have to mean endless complaints about tired legs. The trick? Give them a mission.

Pick an easy trail and turn it into a scavenger hunt. Spot a butterfly, find a gum leaf bigger than your hand, listen for a kookaburra, and collect interesting fallen leaves.

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve in Maleny is brilliant for this adventure. Immerse in rainforest vibes without being too challenging. Noosa National Park is another beautiful option, especially if you only do a short section of the coastal track.

On the Gold Coast, the walk around Burleigh Head National Park is manageable for families and comes with spectacular ocean views for everyone in the family to enjoy.

4. Bike Or Scooter On A Scenic Trail

Some days in the holidays are made for movement, the kind where everyone sleeps better afterwards. April’s cooler mornings are ideal for a family bike or scooter outing.

The Gold Coast Oceanway is an easy favourite, with long flat stretches and plenty of stops for snacks or playground breaks. Up on the Sunshine Coast, the coastal pathways around Caloundra are perfect for kids who want a safe ride without steep hills.

Even Brisbane’s river paths (from New Farm through to South Bank) make for a surprisingly fun family loop, especially if you reward everyone with an ice cream halfway.

5. Mini Day Trip To Somewhere New

School holidays are the perfect excuse to head slightly further afield.

A trip to Australia Zoo in Beerwah is always unforgettable, especially for animal-obsessed kids. If you’re after something a little quieter, places like The Ginger Factory in Yandina or Maleny Dairies farm tours are great for younger children.

The key with day trips is pacing: arrive early, plan a lunch stop, and don’t try to cram too much into one day. Holidays feel better when they’re not rushed.

Indoor Ideas

Outdoor adventures are amazing, but indoor activities can be just as holiday-worthy, especially when you want something calmer, cooler, or closer to home.

6. Active Indoor Play Centre

When the kids have too much energy and you’ve run out of backyard stamina, indoor play centres are a gift. There are plenty of active indoor options that even teens would love.

On the Gold Coast, Bounce in Burleigh Waters is a big hit, while Sunshine Coast families love Rush Adventureland in Maroochydore.

Brisbane has plenty of options too, including larger adventure-style venues like Urban Xtreme in Hendra.

Book ahead and choose early morning sessions when you can. They’re usually quieter and better for younger kids.

7. Crafting At Home

A simple craft day can fill an entire morning, especially around Easter. Crafting activities are perfect for younger kids and these activities can also improve their motor skills.

Set up the table with whatever you have like cardboard boxes, coloured paper, paint, stickers, even leaves collected from your nature walk. You might want to check out DIY and crafting videos on YouTube for inspiration.

Here are some of the projects you might want to try with your kids:

  • Easter decorations
  • Recycled “robots”
  • Nature collages
  • Painted pots for herbs or flowers

8. Baking Together

Holiday baking is messy, chaotic, and absolutely worth it.

Try something simple like banana muffins, cupcakes, homemade pizzas, or classic Anzac biscuits. Kids can measure, stir, decorate, and most importantly, eat the results.

Plus, it turns into an easy afternoon tea which can easily fold into houseplay.

9. Museum Or Aquarium Visit

For a day that feels fun and vaguely educational, Brisbane’s Queensland Museum is always a winner, especially with interactive spaces like SparkLab.

On the Sunshine Coast, SEA LIFE Aquarium is a great option for marine-loving kids, and the Gold Coast’s HOTA Gallery often has family-friendly exhibits and workshops during school holidays.

Book ahead. April break programs sell out fast.

10. Movie Night At Home

A family movie night is even better when it feels like a proper holiday activity. Pick a theme, make popcorn, build a blanket fort, and even print “tickets” for entry.

If you have an open space at home, set up a white screen and projector for an evening with your favourite bunch and a good movie under the stars.

Having a theme can also make movie nights more exciting, especially for the little ones. Here are some ideas:

  • Ocean theme + Finding Nemo
  • Jungle theme + Madagascar
  • Adventure theme + treasure hunt before the movie

Making April School Holidays Memorable

April is genuinely one of the best times of the year to do a bunch of outdoor and indoor activities with the kids. Warm days, comfortable weather, and plenty of adventures to choose from bring home the endless magic they will cherish for a lifetime.

Just remember that you don’t need to fill every moment. Just pick out a few and make sure to keep plans flexible. Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun! Because somehow, school holidays always tick away so fast.
