Helping kids cope during and after Tropical Cyclone Alfred

As communities across Queensland and New South Wales brace for Tropical Cyclone Alfred, parents and carers are not only preparing homes but also their children’s emotions. Natural disasters can be scary for little ones (and grown-ups too!), but experts from the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program have some practical tips to help families stay resilient during and after the storm.

Dr. Vanessa Cobham, co-author of Fear-Less Triple P Online and Professor at The University of Queensland’s School of Psychology, reminds us that it’s completely normal for kids (and parents) to experience a mix of emotions—fear, anxiety, sadness, or even anger—when facing a disaster. However, with the right approach, families can weather the emotional storm together.

Building an Emotional Resilience Plan

Just like you’ve stocked up on food, water, and batteries, it’s important to prepare emotionally too. Here’s how:

1. Talk it out
Honest and open conversations can help kids feel more in control. Let them ask questions and talk about what might happen. Involving them in small tasks—like packing a ‘storm kit’ with their favourite toy or book—can help them feel prepared rather than powerless.

2. Stay calm (even when you aren’t feeling it)
Children take their cues from us. If we can model calmness—through deep breaths, reassuring words, or even a little humour—they’re more likely to feel safe and secure. Let them know it’s okay to feel stressed but that you’ll face it together.

3. Listen and validate
If your child is feeling anxious, let them talk. Simply pausing and listening can help ease their worries. Reassure them that their feelings are valid and that emotions, like storms, pass in time.

4. Lean on your village
Now is the time to tap into your support network. Make a list of trusted friends, family members, or community resources you can reach out to. If your child needs extra support, services like Kids Helpline (1800 551 800) or Lifeline (13 11 14) are always available.

5. Use your parenting toolbox
Parenting is full of challenges, and you’ve likely already developed strategies that help your family through tough times. Keep these in mind, and know that free parenting resources—like those from Triple P – Positive Parenting Program—are available 24/7 at triplep-parenting.net.au.

Looking Beyond the Storm

The impact of a cyclone doesn’t end when the winds die down. Research shows that 5–15% of Australian children experience significant mental health symptoms after a disaster. Keeping an eye on your child’s emotional wellbeing in the weeks and months ahead is just as important as getting through the storm itself. If you notice ongoing distress, reach out for support—whether it’s talking with your GP or a counselor or accessing free parenting programs online.

While storms can bring uncertainty, one thing remains steady: the love and support within your family. By preparing emotionally as well as physically, you’re helping your children build resilience that will carry them through this and future challenges.

Stay safe, stay connected, and know that support is always available when you need it.
