An innovative food initiative combining a kids cookbook and food journal for primary school students has launched on the Sunshine Coast.
The Tuck Box Initiative was launched by social entrepreneur, primary educator and avid cook Gemma Brown. It aims to promote positive nutrition and create long-term, life-changing habits around food. It also encourages families to adopt sustainable practices and reduce single-use plastics.
“Our mission is to educate, empower and encourage school children to take responsibility for their nutrition and become active participants in the fight against food waste,” said Gemma. “We believe that by encouraging our students to be proactive, ethically minded, and health conscious, we can create a healthier, more sustainable future.”
Central to the initiative is The Good Food Journal, a unique, hybrid activity kids cookbook. The kids cookbook inspires kids to get involved in the kitchen and create their own school lunches (coined ‘Tuck Boxes’.) Aligned with the Queensland V9 Primary Curriculum, The Good Food Journal is designed as a classroom resource. It can be used in schools as part of their Health and Home Economics teaching. It is also a helpful tool for families hoping to help their children better understand nutrition at home.
“The Good Food Journal is a hybrid workbook,” said Gemma. “It combines fun food activities, meal planning, goal setting, and cooking challenges based on simple, homemade recipes.”
“The creation of long-term healthy habits is the ultimate aim! And healthy habits mean healthier, happier people and planet!”
