From an idea conceived in a Caloundra internet cafe to becoming an iconic Queensland kids swimwear brand, Little Shark Fin kids swimwear is renowned for its whimsical prints. However, there is much more to these iconic togs than meets the eye. We grab a coffee with founder Philippa Hayball to learn more about the story behind the brand.
Little Shark Fin has come full circle since its beginning and is now relaunching with your son! How has the journey been?
Yes! Little Shark Fin was born 13 years ago, out of the need parents expressed to me for quality sun protection in swimwear for their kids. However, juggling business and being a single parent meant putting the business on hold for a short while. But we are back and my 12-year-old son is also part of this small family business.
The prints for Little Shark Fin kids swimwear are so unique! Where does the inspiration come from?
The swimwear design is a collaboration with my friend JoJo. She is an artist who formerly worked in animation and loves creating whimsical and playful scenes. Our fun and vibrant designs allow kids to express themselves uniquely and creatively. Every print is hand-drawn, giving each piece a unique, fun story. Our designs are so different that they stand out in a crowd!
But it’s not just about how they look, right? The Queensland beach life is tough on togs. What’s the secret behind Little Shark Fin’s durability?
We’ve carefully designed Little Shark Fin swimwear to be durable and maintain its shape to withstand the demands of kid life in Queensland. Our swimwear offers UPF50+ sun protection, chlorine resistance, and fade resistance, making it perfect for extended wear. With kids spending countless hours playing in the sun at the beach, pool, camping, and in backyards, our swimwear is up for the challenge!
When is the new range due for release, and what can we expect from the designs?
The new range is due in Springtime. It is vibrant in pattern and colour, each a unique expression for any child wearing them. We can’t wait to see these designs out on adventures!
The prints are so gorgeous. Will you ever branch out into adult swimwear? (Asking for a friend!)
Haha! Other adults have asked, too! Understandably, adults would love something different and something that expresses their creativity, too. We are working on this… watch this space!
What has the response been so far, and where can people see or enquire about Little Shark Fin?
The feedback has been fantastic! The designs have been a labour of love and imagination, and this shines through when seeing our customers’ responses directly when we do markets like Cotton Tree on the Sunshine Coast. We are also on Facebook and Instagram and have our full range on our website. Enquiries are welcome at
