Looking for Sunshine Coast walks for kids that feel like a true adventure? Tucked between Noosa and Coolum, the newly completed Lake Weyba Foreshore Trail is one to add straight to your weekend list.
Just 15 minutes north of Coolum, this 6.6-kilometre lakeside walk offers something a little different — a nature-rich, slightly wild experience that adventurous families will love. Even better, dogs are welcome on leash, so it’s a full family outing.
A lakeside walk that keeps things interesting
Starting from Lake Weyba Drive, the trail winds along the lake’s edge, weaving through wetlands, mangroves and coastal bushland. At times you’ll stroll beside the water; at others, you’ll step right through it — with shallow crossings adding a fun, unexpected twist for kids.
A standout moment is the 24-metre suspension bridge at Horsman Creek, gently swaying above the water and offering beautiful views across the lake. It’s a natural pause point — and a highlight for little explorers.
This newly completed section connects Lake Weyba through to Peregian, opening up a fresh way to explore the coastline. Improved surfaces, footbridges and clear signage make the trail easier to navigate, while still preserving its natural, off-the-beaten-track feel.

Nature at its best
Lake Weyba is part of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve and is recognised as an important wetland. The calm, shallow lake and surrounding ecosystems are home to a rich variety of wildlife, from fish and crustaceans to rays and even small sharks.
Along the way, you’ll pass mangroves, seagrass beds and coastal vegetation, with plenty of opportunities for kids to spot wildlife and connect with nature. It’s the kind of walk that invites you to slow down, explore and get a little muddy along the way.
Is it suitable for families?
For those seeking Sunshine Coast walks for kids with a sense of adventure, this trail delivers, but it’s not your typical flat, pram-friendly path.
Some sections are rated Grade 4, meaning the terrain can be uneven, muddy after rain and occasionally harder to follow. Water crossings and tidal conditions are part of the experience, so it’s best suited to families with older kids or confident little walkers.
Bridges are pedestrian-only, and dogs are welcome on leash.
