Dog Safety Week is on from 1st to 7th July, with a pawsome line-up of activities designed to promote responsible pet ownership.
Organised by Sunshine Coast Council, Dog Safety Week is for everyone in the community, whether you are a seasoned dog owner or have yet to welcome a pup.
Throughout the week, pop-up educational events will be held, designed to provide valuable information to dog owners on how to be responsible pet parents.
Sunshine Coast Libraries will host storytime sessions throughout the week featuring the popular dog safety-themed book When Sammy Met Sunny. Kids can meet Sunny, participate in activities, and take a ‘Stay Safe’ bag home. There’s also a colouring competition to win copies of the book.
Dog Safety Week is the perfect time to have a family conversation about responsible pet ownership and dog safety. Council wants to remind dog owners about the importance of leash laws, keeping pups out of designated off-limits zones like playgrounds and flagged beach areas, and always checking signage to ensure dogs are allowed and whether leash restrictions apply.
This week is also an excellent opportunity to teach children how to interact safely with dogs and remind them of the “four steps to greeting a dog”.
4 steps to greeting a dog safely
- Always ask your parent or guardian for permission before approaching a dog.
- Politely ask the owner, “Can I please pat your dog?”
- Let the dog sniff your closed fist held low before attempting to pet them.
- Gently pat the dog on the back or shoulder, avoiding their head.
It’s important to remind children that some dogs might be nervous or dislike being petted and never to approach a dog that is tied up or alone.
