The newest cultural hub on the Sunshine Coast, Library+ Caloundra, has officially opened its doors, and it’s already shaping up to be the Sunshine Coast’s favourite (and totally free!) family-friendly destination.
Located at 1 Omrah Avenue, the stunning new multi-level library is more than a place to borrow books. It’s a dynamic hub for learning, creativity and connection, designed with families firmly in mind. From imaginative play spaces to creative studios and a coffee shop for parents to relax in, Library+ is a modern reimagining of what a community library can be.
A library, plus so much more
At the opening celebration, Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Rosanna Natoli described the new facility as “a vibrant, inclusive and future-focused space, one that responds to the needs of a growing population and evolving community expectations.” And it really is that. Books remain at the heart of the experience, but the new Library+ adds opportunities for connection, wellbeing, and play. With dedicated areas for children, digital studios for teens and adults, and flexible community venues, there’s something for everyone.
Councillor Terry Landsberg said it best: “This is a library first and books remain at the heart of the experience, but that’s just the beginning.”

The Caloundra children’s library: A wonderland of discovery
For parents and carers, the standout feature has to be the children’s zone — a purpose-built space designed to spark curiosity in even the youngest readers. Bright, playful, and interactive, it includes:
- An activity wall to keep hands busy and minds engaged.
- Vibrant play spaces that invite exploration and imagination.
- Cosy reading cubbies where kids can curl up with their favourite stories.
- A huge toy library with the latest toys and games.
It’s a space that feels equal parts playground and storybook world, making the joy of reading and literacy both tangible and irresistible.
And the library team has plans that will see the space bursting with energy over the coming months, thanks to a comprehensive program of guided tours, hands-on activities, and creative sessions, all designed to help locals become familiar with everything the new Library+ has to offer.

A sustainable step forward for Sunshine Coast Libraries
It’s not just families who’ll benefit. Library+ is also a win for the planet.
The building boasts a 6-Star Green Star rating, thanks to features such as solar panels, water-saving systems, energy-efficient design, and battery storage that feeds excess energy back into the grid.
Even during construction, the project prioritised sustainability: more than 90 per cent of demolition materials were recycled or repurposed, and furniture was given a second life instead of being sent to the landfill.
Clever spaces for everyone
After-hours reservation collection, making it easier for busy families to pick up books when it suits them
- Quiet zones for homework or solo study
- AV booths and sound-insulated areas for teens needing a tech-ready study spot
- Covered outdoor areas for fresh-air reading
- Creative studios, including two digital recording spaces for budding musicians, podcasters or content creators
There’s even a community jigsaw table — a small but clever addition that encourages casual conversation and connection between visitors.
And when the kids are happily reading? Parents can sneak in a coffee at the ground-floor café or relax in one of the many cosy nooks scattered throughout the building.
Located in the heart of Caloundra, Library+ makes it easy to tie a library trip into a family day out. Once you’ve explored the kids’ zone, you’re just steps away from beaches, boutique shops and a host of eateries.

Why families will love the new children’s library
For parents, Library+ Caloundra offers something rare: a space where learning, play, and community all come together under one roof. It’s a safe and stimulating environment for kids to discover the magic of books, and a welcoming spot for families to spend quality time together.
As Councillor Landsberg encouraged: “I invite everyone in our community to come and see how you might use and enjoy this new space.”
For local families, that might mean a weekly trip to Storytime, a rainy-day play session in the kids’ zone, or even a quiet moment with a coffee while the kids choose their next favourite book to borrow.
One thing’s for certain: Library+ Caloundra isn’t just a library, it’s the start of many new family stories.
