With a passion for education and a deep understanding of children’s emotional and academic needs, Dione McCurdy has recently taken over as the owner of Gold Coast tutoring service NumberWorks’nWords Oxenford.
We sat down with Dione to chat about her passion for education, what makes the centre’s approach so effective, and why kids can’t wait to walk through the door each week.
What brings you to the centre? Why are you passionate about tutoring?
I’ve always been passionate about education and helping children grow in confidence. My background includes many fulfilling years as a Teacher Aide and extensive experience in Human Resources, where I developed strong skills in training, coaching and emotional intelligence. I also raised a child with ADHD, so I understand the challenges many students face in a traditional classroom. When the opportunity to lead NumberWorks’nWords Oxenford came up, it felt like a perfect fit—combining my love of learning with my desire to support children in a meaningful way. I’m deeply committed to creating a welcoming environment where every child feels confident, supported and inspired to reach their academic goals.
Why do you think the NumberWorks’nWords program gets through to kids so well?
It’s the consistency, repetition, and our bespoke software—every child follows a completely individualised program. We begin by assessing each student to understand their strengths and learning gaps, then tailor a curriculum-aligned plan just for them. We’re not guessing; we’re building from where they are, and that makes a real difference.
What do you find kids love most about the tutoring sessions?
Kids love coming here—it’s fun, engaging, and filled with positive energy. Our tutors are skilled, bright university students who connect brilliantly with the kids. The centre is full of encouragement—certificates, music, clapping when a milestone is reached, even quick brain-break games to keep things fresh. It’s a totally different experience from school, especially for kids who might struggle in a traditional classroom. Here, they feel seen, valued and celebrated.
What do you love most about tutoring?
It’s watching the shift in confidence—seeing a child walk in unsure and grow into someone who believes in their ability over time. That’s powerful. I love being part of that journey. It’s not just about learning content; it’s about helping children feel capable and proud of their achievements.
What should parents look for when choosing a tutor?
Look beyond just ‘kitchen table tutoring’ or homework help. That doesn’t necessarily close learning gaps. Parents should seek a centre that offers proper diagnostic assessments, individualised learning plans, regular progress updates, and a nurturing, success-oriented environment.
