A teen’s review of Luzia by Cirque Du Soleil

Our family recently attended the matinee show of Luzia by Cirque Du Soleil in Brisbane and were completely mesmerised from the minute it began.

The name LUZIA is a combination of the Spanish words for light (Luz) and rain (Lluvia). It marks the first time in Cirque du Soleil history that the element of rain appears under the Big Top.

There were so many amazing parts of the show, but my favourite part was when the rain waterfall started changing patterns. Watching how the water could move in so many ways was really mesmerising. Another part I loved was when the Traveller threw a giant ball into the audience. It felt like we were part of the show, which was really fun. Also, when the traveller tricked everyone by pretending to take off his pants, but he had two pairs on! It was very clever. While this was happening, cleverly distracting the audience – the pool of water seemingly ‘disappeared’ from the stage floor.

My favourite performer was the Traveller. He was so funny, and what made him stand out was that he only communicated with us by using a whistle. He didn’t even need to speak words to make everyone laugh. His sense of humour was playful, and he had great interaction with the audience, which kept things entertaining.

I loved the animal costumes, especially how a group of performers came together to control a horse and a tiger. It felt like the animals were real because of how smoothly they moved. It was impressive how all the performers could work together like that.

We had great seats in the middle section, close to the stage, which gave us the perfect view of everything happening. The venue itself was amazing—it was big, with lots of space for merchandise, seating, food, and drinks. The food was really yummy – I had a warm hot dog, which tasted great, and my family and I had some delicious fairy floss. Overall, the venue made the experience even more special. The show was the perfect length and went for 2 hours, including intermission.

The whole experience felt magical. Everything was so well put together from the moment we arrived, from the performers to the lighting and the music. I hadn’t been to a circus like this before, so it was an unforgettable show.

Luzia by Cirque Du Soleil really is extraordinary. The whole performance was so unique and amazing, it’s not something you see every day. Highly recommended for the whole family and all ages.

FUN FACTS

  • The name LUZIA is a combination of the Spanish words for light (Luz) and rain (Lluvia) and marks the first time in Cirque du Soleil history the element of rain appears under the Big Top
  • 6,000 litres (1,585 gallons) of recycled water are used throughout the performance. For the artists’ well-being, the water is filtered, disinfected, and maintained at a constant 28°C (82°F).
  • The stage floor has 94,657 holes through which the water drains into a 3,500-litre basin hidden underneath.
  • The Big Top for LUZIA stands 19 metres (62 feet) high and is 51 metres (167 feet) in diameter.
  • It takes 8 days to set up the entire site, including the Big Top, entrance tent, VIP tent and rehearsal spaces.
  • There are close to 1,000 costume pieces seen on stage in LUZIA.
  • Each performance requires 140 pairs of shoes.
  • Because many artists perform in the water, special types of soles had to be designed for shoes.
  • Costume artisans developed 6 crocodile heads, 1 iguana shawl, 1 cockroach, 1 grasshopper, 1 armadillo, 1 snake, 5 swordfish heads and 3 tuna heads. Some of the “body parts” are manipulated like puppets so that the creatures look alive.
