I just finished reading Curious Kai Asks Why by Dr Sarah Pye, and I honestly loved it! It’s about a girl named Kai who can’t stop asking questions about the world around her, especially about animals and the environment. She lives in Queensland with her mum (who’s an artist) and her best friend, a magpie called Elvis. When a huge storm hits and Elvis disappears, Kai starts a big adventure to learn more about nature, animals, and how humans can help protect the planet.
Throughout the story, Kai meets real scientists and experts who teach her about different animals – from songbirds and bilbies to even the mysterious Yowie! What I thought was really cool was how the story mixes fun adventures with real science. I didn’t even realise I was learning stuff while reading, like how birds have accents, how bilbies dig spiral burrows to keep cool, and how songbirds have a special organ called a syrinx that helps them sing two notes at once!
The main message of the book is about curiosity and caring for the planet. Kai learns that one person (even a kid!) can make a difference just by asking questions, learning, and sharing what they find out. It made me think about how we can all help animals and the environment, even in small ways.
What I liked most was Kai herself. She’s funny, smart, and not afraid to ask “why?” even when adults don’t know the answer. She reminded me a bit of me, because I’m always asking questions too! I also loved her friendship with Elvis the magpie; it was really sweet and made me want a bird bestie of my own.
I think Curious Kai Asks Why is perfect for kids who love animals, adventures, or science. It’s exciting, interesting, and sometimes even a bit emotional. It made me laugh, and it also made me want to go outside and explore. I can’t wait to see what Kai discovers next!
