Families across the region now have a new way to explore hobbies, save money and reduce waste, with the launch of the ‘Library of Things’ at Noosa Libraries.
From podcasting kits and telescopes to hiking poles, coding tools, photography gear and pickleball sets, more than 40 practical and creative items are now available to borrow — just like a book.
Mayor Frank Wilkie said the initiative adds even more value to a service already embraced by the community.
“Noosa Libraries has more than 200,000 loanable items and the ‘Library of Things’ takes that even further by providing access to useful, fun and sometimes surprising items that support creativity, exploration and sustainable living,” Mayor Wilkie said.

For families, the benefits are immediate. Children can experiment with STEM tools such as Sphero coding kits, microscopes and binocular packs. Parents can trial home energy efficiency kits, borrow camping lanterns for a weekend adventure, or test photography equipment before committing to a purchase.
With items available for a three-week loan (two per customer), the collection is designed to help residents try something new without the cost or clutter of ownership.
“The Library of Things is part of Council’s commitment to reducing waste and encouraging reuse,” Mayor Wilkie said. “By borrowing instead of buying, residents can save money and help minimise the environmental impact of single-use or seldom-used items.”
Peregian Digital Hub Program Officer Deidre Marczynski said the collection also supports families building digital skills together.
“We’re seeing more people exploring content creation, podcasting, coding and graphic design,” Ms Marczynski said. “The Library of Things gives our community the chance to try quality tech gear without having to buy it, so there’s no excuse not to get started.”
For families looking to spark curiosity, support a new hobby or simply make life more affordable, the Library of Things opens the door to hands-on learning … without the price tag.
