An oasis of calm in the bustling city, Karawatha Forest Park is a great place to take the family for a peaceful ramble. With around 900 hectares to explore, you can easily spend a day in the serene bushland, surrounded by nothing but birdsong.
Visitors can enjoy nature spotting while they amble along one of the walking tracks. In the wetlands, keep an eye out for some endangered species such as the squirrel glider, greater glider, and rare frogs. In the forest, you might also spot eastern grey kangaroos, rednecked wallabies and swamp wallabies. There are also over 100 species of birds to find in the forest! Be sure not to miss the wonderful view from Poet’s Rock, which offers an outlook over the forest.
When you want to have a break, enjoy a picnic in one of the shelters, or use the barbecue facilities. There are two picnic areas, one with access from Illaweena Street, Drewvale, where you can relax beside the lagoon, and the other near the Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre (access from Acacia Road). Here you will find picnic shelters and barbeques where you can sit and relax while the kids try out the nature playground. The playground is a well-designed natural space. As well as having plenty of tree stumps to balance on and climb, there is water flowing from a pump that the kids can follow down a little stream, among some wonderful animal sculptures.
Once they have tired of the playground, be sure to visit the Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre. A great interactive and informative space, features include a night-time audio visual experience room, an interactive floor projection of a frog habitat, and even a virtual reality experience, where you can experience Karawatha Forest as though you were a bird.
The centre also offers a great range of events such as family adventure walks, upcycling workshops and soccer skill days. See here for details.
