Let Willy Wonka inspire your 2024 Book Week costume

Stuck for ideas for Book Week? Here is how to create a simple Willy Wonka costume.

Willy Wonka is a character beloved by readers and moviegoers alike. While readers have long loved the cheeky chocolatier since Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was first published in 1964, the recent Wonka book and film have introduced him to the next generation.

With his eccentric fashion sense and passion for confectionery, he has become an iconic figure in children’s literature.

With Book Week just around the corner, there’s never been a better time to dress your child in purple velvet – and while you’re at it, why not have a sneaky chocolate snack for yourself?

The best part of this costume is that purple jacket aside, everything is relatively easy to put together. If you can’t find purple velvet, any blazer will do. It’s the top hat and cane that really make for a Willy Wonka look.

What you need to create your Willy Wonka Book Week costume

  • Purple velvet jacket or coat
  • White shirt
  • Colourful bow tie
  • Green or brown trousers
  • Brown top hat
  • Walking cane
  • Fake moustache (optional)
  • Golden ticket printout (optional)
  • White gloves (optional)

How to create your Willy Wonka Book Week costume

  1. Find a purple velvet jacket or coat. If you can’t find velvet, any purple jacket will do.
  2. Wear a plain white shirt underneath the jacket.
  3. Add a colourful bow tie to the shirt. Bright colours like red or blue work well.
  4. Pair the outfit with green or brown trousers.
  5. Wear a brown top hat to complete the look.
  6. Carry a walking cane as an accessory.
  7. If you want to go the extra mile, add a fake moustache.
  8. Print out a golden ticket and carry it as a prop.
  9. Wear white gloves for an extra touch of elegance.

While the classic Wonka costume is the most recognisable, there are also opportunities for creative variations.

Drawing inspiration from different book and film adaptations, you can explore alternative looks, from the darker, more eccentric portrayal in the 2005 remake to the youthful, aspiring candymaker aesthetic of the new Wonka film.

Whether you opt for the classic purple velvet ensemble or a more unique interpretation, embracing the spirit of Willy Wonka is sure to make Book Week a truly unforgettable experience. After all, as the chocolatier himself would say, ‘A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.’
