Draft unveiled for new Sunshine Coast park – have your say!

The plan for a new district-level recreation park in the Sunshine Coast hinterland is taking shape.

Sunshine Coast Council has developed a draft concept plan for Maleny District Park, and the next step is to ask the community if this new Sunshine Coast park hits the mark.

The draft concept plan for Maleny District Park sets the blueprint for the park’s long-term multi-staged development, which will be subject to future budget approvals.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston said the community’s ideas and feedback had been integral to developing the concept plan for the park.

“We have developed a concept plan for a new district recreation park which will complement the other recreation offerings in the Maleny Community Precinct,” Cr Johnston said.

“The new district park will be a place for our community to come and enjoy the outdoors together, as they experience all that our vibrant town centre and surrounds have to offer.”

Four distinct areas with a variety of experiences at this new Sunshine Coast park

The district park has been divided into four distinct areas, each offering a variety of different recreational experiences.

‘The Lookout’ along North Maleny Road will be an ideal location to take in the views across the precinct, with a viewing spot and picnic facilities proposed.

‘The Bails’ near the old Fairview Milking Bails proposes a small playground, open lawn area and several picnic locations, which could be a great space for gathering during the day or viewing the stars at night.

Next to Cloudwalk Estate, ‘The Hill’ takes advantage of the area’s natural topography for a proposed mountain bike skills course, a ‘mega’ slide and viewing places over the wetlands and forest.

To the south of ‘The Hill, ‘The Hub’ is proposed to be the key activity area, with a toilet block, fenced dog exercise area, ample kick-and-throw space, barbecue picnic facilities, multi-sports courts and a large basket swing.

Cr Johnston said the four different areas would be connected by an expanded footpath and trail network and would ultimately be serviced by conveniently located parking.

“We have designed each space to enhance its natural features while integrating the valuable ideas contributed by our community,” Cr Johnston said.

“Now we’re seeking feedback on the draft concept plan to ensure we’ve got it right for those who live, work and play here.”
