Sunshine Butterflies Disability Charity has successfully opened its new accessible playground at its 15-acre facility ‘Our Backyard’ in Cooroibah on the Sunshine Coast. The unique natural playground is designed for individuals of all abilities. It features elements of sandstone and timber in its design.
There was face painting and and much fun to be had on the new playground at the official opening on March 31. Sunshine Butterflies’ music program ‘Rockability’ provided the entertainment.

“The adventure playground offers a space for play as well as social and learning experiences for children of all abilities,” Sunshine Butterflies’ CEO and Founder, Leanne Walsh, says.
Special guests included Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart, Tourism Noosa CEO Melanie Anderson, Alexa Leary from Move for Lex the team from Tourism Noosa. Noosa Council Community Development, Play Matters Australia, project manager Damien Walsh and The Primary Club of Australia representative Jason Law helped celebrate the exciting milestone.
Mayor Clare Stewart and Alexa Leary helped open the playground.
“Both [women] have sustained life-changing injuries and are hugely influential within the disability community,” Ms Walsh says.

What is at the new accessible playground?
The upgraded playground space at Sunshine Butterflies offers diverse and beneficial experiences. Both for neurotypical children and children living with disability.
Project manager Damien Walsh says the new playground includes an accessible nest swing, soft fall throughout, wheelchair-accessible paths and ramps.
“There are sensory activity panels for fine motor skills and an adventure treehouse to enjoy. We also included water play features with a natural stream and wishing well, sand, water and mud play. All which are accessible from a wheelchair.”

Kindergarten groups, all ability playgroups, community groups, mothers groups and school groups will all benefit from the playground.
Play Matters Australia (formerly Playgroup QLD) will hold a weekly playgroup at the Sunshine Butterflies playground. It will gather every Tuesday from 9am to 11am.
Sunshine Butterflies also has an on-site café, farm animals and lovely shaded areas. This makes the playground the perfect location for birthday parties and family-friendly events too.
