How Sunshine Beach State School is redefining the Prep experience

Sharing a boundary with the lush, green fringes of the Noosa National Park, Sunshine Beach State School has earned a reputation as the Sunshine Coast’s most compelling alternative to private education. The epitome of a quiet achiever, this beachside school has recently set a new benchmark for Prep learning, combining high-end pedagogy with a natural environment in which the local wildlife — from koalas to the rare Birdwing Butterfly — is practically part of the student council.

But it’s not just the idyllic setting that sets Sunshine Beach apart. As an accredited Glasser Quality School, Sunshine Beach State School operates on the fundamental belief that relationships are paramount. Their motto, ‘A Good Place to Be’, isn’t just a slogan on a hat; it’s a lived philosophy rooted in the principles of Choice Theory. Rather than relying on traditional pressure or rigid control, this philosophical framework empowers children to understand that they are the primary ‘managers’ of their own lives, teaching them to recognise their own needs and make conscious, positive choices that strengthen their relationships and help them engage more deeply with their learning.

Now, the school is taking its commitment to the ‘whole child’ a step further, as this year, Sunshine Beach State School has officially rolled out the Walker Learning pedagogy in its Prep classrooms, creating a seamless, joyful transition from the play-based learning of Kindergarten to the structured world of primary school.

What is Walker Learning?

If you’ve ever watched a child lost in a world of LEGO or deep in ‘research’ in a backyard sandpit, you’ve seen the spark that Walker Learning aims to capture. Developed by Early Life Foundations, Walker Learning is Australia’s first major holistic pedagogy that is play-based and individual inquiry-based.

Unlike traditional ‘sit-still-and-listen’ models, Walker Learning recognises that children are natural scientists and explorers.

The approach is built around several key components:

  • Investigations: 40–45 minute sessions where children explore ‘stations’ (such as tinkering, construction, dramatic play, or collage) based on their interests.
  • Tuning In: A collaborative session where teachers link these play-based interests back to the Australian Curriculum.
  • Reflection: A time for students to share their discoveries, fostering oral language and self-confidence.

Because it was developed in Australia, it fits the national curriculum and culture like a glove — focusing on what Australian kids need to thrive in the 21st century.

The sunshine fit: Bridging the gap

For many children, the jump from Kindergarten to Prep can feel like a huge pendulum swing. One week, they are leading their own play; the next, they are expected to be ‘curriculum-driven’ learners.

“We wanted to bridge that gap to ease that transition,” explains Elise Maguire, Principal at Sunshine Beach State School.

“For our Prep teachers, returning to an intentional, play-based approach was incredibly exciting because they know that is how children learn best.”

This year, the school successfully married the Walker approach with the implementation of the new Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum. The classroom environments have been entirely transformed, replacing rows of desks with intimate, inviting stations designed to spark curiosity.

Importantly, this is not a hands-off approach. The curriculum dictates the environment first. If a child spends their morning entirely in the construction space, the teacher steps in to layer the academic milestones directly onto that interest.

“If that’s what they want to explore, then it’s the teacher’s role to come on board and say, ‘Okay, well maybe we need some signs in this construction space. How could we write that? What is that going to look like?’ You’re bringing in those elements of the curriculum alongside that investigation,” says Clair Allan, Head of Curriculum. “Suddenly, a block tower becomes a lesson in literacy and environmental custodianship.”

From mathematics explored through the tessellation of geometric puzzle blocks to language skills built through ‘provocation baskets’ left out for discovery, the focus shifts to how children think rather than just what they memorise.

The school has even created a dedicated Early Years Hub, bringing Prep and Year 1 students into the same area. This allows the Walker Learning philosophy to flow naturally through the first years of schooling, with significant results across early years classrooms.

“The results have been immediate,” says Kathryn Cook, Deputy Principal at Sunshine Beach State School. “We’ve already seen a significant decrease in challenging behaviours and a huge spike in engagement. When children have agency over their learning, they don’t just show up; they belong.”

A boutique education without the price tag

What makes this rollout particularly successful is how it dovetails with the school’s existing programs. The Walker Learning ‘investigations’ often spill out into the school’s renowned permaculture garden. Led by environmentalists, the garden is a unique place where students learn about native bees, bush tucker, and biodiversity.

When you combine the Glasser Quality School framework (which teaches kids how to self-manage their behaviour) with Walker Learning (which teaches them how to think and question) and the Outdoor Learning program, you get a world-class education.

As an Education Queensland International School, Sunshine Beach also welcomes students from across the globe, adding a rich layer of cultural diversity to the classrooms.

Usually, this level of specialised, child-centred pedagogy is the domain of high-fee private schools. At Sunshine Beach, it’s a standard part of the state-funded curriculum. This unique position has made this local school a highly sought-after destination, especially for parents who value a boutique, small-school feel while still wanting the learning experience of a top-tier institution.

In a setting where the classroom often has no walls, Sunshine Beach State School doesn’t just teach children how to learn; it invites them to thrive. It really is, quite simply, a good place to be.
