Good news for parents struggling with the cost-of-living crisis: If re-elected in the October 26 election, Labor has promised to provide free school lunches for Prep through Year 6 students at state schools.
The Greens are also promising free lunches to all state school students through Year 12 if elected on the balance of power.
Mr Miles unveiled the $1.4 billion commitment at Sunday at Labor’s official campaign launch.
The proposed free lunch program would commence in 2025 and be available to all students in the state school system.
Labor estimates the program would save parents $1,600 per child per year and benefit the more than 326,000 students who attend state primary schools in Queensland.
Mr Miles described the measure as an investment in the state’s future that would put money back into the pockets of parents.
“It’s universal to avoid stigmatising the kids that need the food the most, but also to ensure that it supports every Queensland family too,” Mr Miles said.
“Being a parent is hard, but this is one way that I can make a difference.
“Just like 50 cent fares, free school lunches for our littlest Queenslanders is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but I need a mandate to do so in my own right.”
