Government Minister and Gaven MP Meaghan Scanlon said, “It’s hard to concentrate in the classroom when you’ve got an empty stomach. Giving our kids a good breakfast sets them up to start the day right and helps them focus on their schoolwork and learning.”
“This program is making a difference for families on the coast who are struggling with rising grocery prices and cost of living pressures.”
Government Minister Leeanne Enoch added, “Kids who learn on a full stomach are more engaged and find it easier to concentrate, leading to better education outcomes. In addition to relieving cost of living pressures, the school breakfast program helps promote social inclusion and attendance within school communities.”
Community partner Y Queensland, who is delivering the program to Gold Coast schools, received $423,000 to deliver the school breakfast program at participating schools across the south-east.”
Damian Foley, Y Queensland, said, “For a variety of reasons, a significant number of children come to school without having had breakfast, and as a result, these children are disadvantaged by hunger and poor nutrition. Y Queensland’s aim is to ensure students are provided with the best opportunity to make the most of their education and develop healthy eating habits.”
In 2023, through the Queensland Government-supported free school breakfasts and food relief programs, Y Queensland provided more than 1.3 million free breakfasts to students across more than 400 schools.
